Women in Business: The Changing Face of Leadership, by Patricia Werhane, Margaret Posig, Lisa Gundry, Laurel Ofstein, Elizabeth Powell

Female executives of large companies are still in short supply in the U.S., but they have made great strides in recent years and their number is growing. Patricia Werhane and four other leadership experts interviewed twenty-two prominent women―including executives at Kraft, Boeing, and Harley Davidson―to uncover their leadership styles, reveal their most effective practices, and find out how they broke through the glass ceiling. This celebration of stellar executives highlights their achievements, the values and visions that guide them, and the contributions they've made to both their companies and industries. Besides enjoying fascinating stories, readers―both men and women―will gain insights that help them manage and lead better.

Despite enormous strides in the status of women in business, female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies can be counted on two hands, and less than 15 percent of Fortune 500 board seats are held by women. These daunting statistics, however, belie another phenomenon: The iceberg of male domination in the boardroom is beginning to break up and melt. More and more women are assuming positions of real leadership. And it's none too soon. With the increasing diversity of the workforce, businesses need the wisdom successful female executives can offer. To encourage more women to step up to the plate, this book tells many stories of perseverance and inventiveness. But it digs deeper to reveal common qualities and characteristics that reflect a style of leadership that is in stark contrast―in every major dimension, from communication styles to team building to crisis management―to the traditional, white-male model that has dominated practice, theory, and management education. While men tend to be transactional leaders, the women profiled in this book are nothing less than inspiring, transformational leaders. The result is an incisive, engaging, thought-provoking, and ultimately empowering narrative that will serve as a guide for women now entering, progressing, and leading in the workplace―as well as the men with whom they work.

From Booklist
This account of 22 women business leaders is academic in nature, profiling C-suite (or close) professionals who embody primary leadership accomplishments and values, from employee engagement to family-business balance. The female executives featured include Anne Arvia, CEO of ShoreBank; Sondra Healy, cochairman of TurtleWax; and Donna Zarcone, former president and COO of Harley Davidson Financial Services. Statistics and scholarly citations preview highlights of the interviewee’s business career, followed by a profile of her work history and personality, which is captured in direct quotes or through a paraphrase/analysis. The result? A somewhat overworked Midwest-centric narrative about noteworthy women leaders. --Barbara Jacobs

Review
"A collaborative effort of five female academics, this volume engagingly tells the stories of 22 women leaders in corporate and entrepreneurial roles. The book is based on interviews with these leaders and reports on their achievements, the values and visions they bring to and enact in their organizations, and the contributions they have made to the companies in which they hold leadership positions….This is a must read for anyone (regardless of gender, race, or ethnic background) wishing to gain a deeper understanding about leading and managing successfully in a global economy, but it will be of particular interest to those concerned with the growing influence of women in leadership positions….Highly recommended." - Choice

"Werhane et al. interviewed 22 women executives to get their thoughts on leadership styles and how they have broken through the glass ceiling. Each executive's story focuses on one aspect of her career or management style. They share ideas on coaching, mentoring, creativity, building a culture of trust, managing reputations, social commitment, being customer-centered, being a servant-leader, and many other refreshing takes on what has made them and their companies stand out….Women in Business is in the management genre, which makes it better suited for academic and larger public library business collections." - Library Journal

"Werhane (business ethics, DePaul U.) and her co-authors report on their interviews with 22 top women executives, detailing their commitment and perseverance in the face of what must have seemed at the time to be insurmountable odds….Both the interviewers and the interviewed firmly avoid cliches and stereotypes, making this lively and deeply informative." - SciTech Book News
