The book itself is an excellent overview of Afghani regional embroidery

The book itself is an excellent overview of Afghani regional embroidery; it actually covers a broader territory than Afghanistan. Examples in the book are from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well. It opens with some history and cultural background to better understand the materials available (fabric and threads), the variety of stitches used, and the people who embroidered and wore the clothing. It then goes on to have beautiful photos of samples- from caps to bags to clothing. As an embroiderer, I was particularly impressed and happy to see that in place of a simple photograph of the piece at a distance to see the embroidery placement, there were also multiple close-up shots to see distinct stitches used, the sheen or fluff of threads, and variegation in colors. As this is just an introduction to the embroidery, don't expect to find explanations of how to recreate the stitches used or an in-depth interpretation of their symbolism. There is a helpful "further reading" section to the back for people who are intrigued and would like to continue studying. The 4-star review is only because the binding is TERRIBLE. The cover fell off when I was only about 15 pages in.

Marjorie Garber is the William R. Imagined Ancestries of Vietnamese Communisim illuminates the real and imagined lives of Ton Duc Thang (1888–1980), a celebrated revolutionary activist and Vietnamese communist icon, but it is much more than a conventional biography. This multifaceted study constitutes the first detailed re-evaluation of the official history of the Vietnamese Communist Party and is a critical analysis of the inner workings of Vietnamese historiography never before undertaken in its scope.

In prominence and public visibility second only to Ho Chi Minh, whom he succeeded in the presidency, Ton Duc Thang in fact lacked any real power. Author Christoph Giebel reconciles this seeming contradiction by showing that it was only Ton Duc Thang who could personify for the Party crucial legitimizing “ancestries”: those that linked Vietnamese communism with the Russian October Revolution, highlighted proletarian internationalism among its ranks, and rooted the Party in Viet Nam’s south. The study traces the decades-long, complex processes in which famous heroic episodes in Ton Duc Thang’s life were manipulated or simply fabricated and―depending on prevailing historical and political necessities―utilized as propaganda by the Communist Party. Over time, narrative control over these tales switched hands, however, and since the late 1950s the stories came to be used in factional disputes by competing ideological and regional interests within the revolutionary camp.

Based on innovative archival research in Viet Nam and France and on analyses of biographical writings, propaganda, and museum representations, the study challenges core assumptions about the history of the Vietnamese Communist Part and sheds light on divisions within the revolutionary movement along regional, class, and ideological lines. Giebel uses the fictions and contested facts of Ton’s life to demonstrate that history-writing and the constructions of memories and identities are always political acts.

Great history of the Haida people

As collectors of Haida carvings in particular those of Gary Minaker-Russ ( Kiit-Laaghaa) we were intrigued by the background to Haida Culture from the first contact days contained in this book. Robin Wright is the curator of North Western Indian art at the Burke Museum in Seattle and provides a carefully researched look at what was possibly the most advanced native indian culture in the 1800s.
Direct quotations from early european explorer's diaries and beautiful illustrations and color plates make this a great source of knowledge about a remarkable people.

A nice little book

This book apparently is written for the housewife who likes serving pecan nuts or likes baking pecan pies and wants to have some background information. It is very nicely printed, nicely bound and nicely written, with brief easy-to-digest chapters.
There is a modest number of recipes, and a modest bit of natural history. Most of the book is on the history of the pecan growing industry, with a select few historical b&w photographs, and plenty of historical tidbits. This book will make a lovely gift.

About the Author

ANN SLOAN DEVLIN received her Ph.D. in the area of environmental psychology at the University of Michigan. She is currently a professor of Psychology at Connecticut College in New London, CT, where she teaches and does research in the areas of spatial cognition and environment-behavior issues. She is on the board of directors of the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) and serves on the Editorial Review Board for the journal Environment and Behavior.

A Good Source on Mexican Material Culture

In designing a lesson plan on Mexican masks for the Mathers Museum of World Cultures at Indiana University, I found the Donald Cordry Exhibit Catalogue to be one of the most informative sources. Griffith's introduction to the book is clearly written, and well organized. But Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the book is the great number of color plates that accompany the text. It is precisely these illustrations that give this book its flavor. The plates feature masks from different regions of Mexico, especially from the state of Guerrero. Other mask-making traditions represented in this collection are those of the Mayo and Yaqui tribes from Sonora. Their famous "pascola" masks, for example, are among the most strikingly wonderful pieces that one can admire and read about in this book. The catalogue is only sixty-four pages long. But in spite of its short length, it serves well as an introductory source to the mysterious world of masks and masked performances. The high-quality photos alone (thirty-four total) make it well worth it.

When is a mask a skinning?

During his lifetime, Donald Cordry was a respected collector, a veritable walking encyclopedia on the folk arts of Mexico. His research on Indian costumes is highly respected. Unfortnately, Cordry's mask book, published postumously,is a testament to how even a knowledgible collector can be duped by unscrupulous dealers. Many of the masks represented in the book doubtless are genuine. But many are not. It's a pity, but some of the most skillfully carved and creative masks are, in essence, fake. The state museum of Arizona bought more than 500 of Cordry's masks shortly before his death -- again proving that even the experts can be fooled. This is a gorgeous book. The pictures are great, and the "masks" simply breath-taking. Buy and marvel -- but don't believe too much of what you read.
