Having proven their loyalty and "Americanness" during World War II, Mexican Americans in the postwar years wanted to have the civil rights they knew they had earned.

In this book, Richard Griswold del Castillo and Richard Steele investigate how the World War II experiences of Mexican Americans galvanized their struggle for civil rights and how the U.S. government responded to the needs and aspirations of Mexican Americans. The authors demonstrate, for example, that the U.S. government "discovered" Mexican Americans during World War II and set about addressing some of their problems as a way of forestalling a sense of grievance and disaffection that might have made the Mexican American community unwilling to support the war effort. The authors also show that, as much or more than governmental programs, the personal wartime experiences of Mexican Americans formed their civil rights consciousness. The book concludes with a selection of key essays and historical documents from the World War II period that collectively gives a first-person understanding of the civil rights struggles of Mexican Americans.

Excellet book with drawings to inspire

O boy! this book is super excellent.
It contains a series of contemporary drawings that will certainly inspire you. It is worth owning for those low moments at the studio. Or to have on your coffee table. Regardless of your purpose, this book will entertain you.

You'll be wow'ed!

PS: The drawings were once part of an exhibition at an American museum. The curator got an A++ with his work. Yeah! :^)

PS2: I want to own this book. Too expensive yet. Will wait until the price drops. I am patient.

About the Author
LEAH GOLDBERG (1911–1970) was the author of nine collections of poetry, three plays, three novels, a memoir, literary criticism, children’s stories, and translations of Ibsen, Petrarch, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, and other classical and modern poets and novelists. Shortly after her death, Goldberg received Israel’s highest honor, the Israel Prize.

ANNIE KANTAR is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Prize and a Fulbright Scholarship. Her poems and translations have appeared in journals such as The American Literary Review, Barrow Street, and Tikkun.

Several of James Nelson's books, have formed a foundation for my understing of myself in the context of, and relaitionship with God/faith. "The Intimate Connection" directs the reader's attention to specific areas of sexuality and a man's relationship to God, of a man's view and acceptence of himself in his totality as being key to his acceptence of God as living and vital. The book is based on Nelson's views of the embodiment of God and Christ.

Love is the unfinished business of the sexual revolution.

It all depends on your theology. Nelson uses the Jacob saga as an example: He works for Laban so he can marry Rachel – the early adult male works for his heart's desire only to discover he has been tricked - he gets Leah. His work was satisfying and served others but not motivated from deep inside but from older generation's manipulation. So he works another 7 years and gets Rachel - starting a new quest through spiritual direction or, psychotherapy and so finds feminine. In his last 7 years Jacob works to build up wealth - old age in which we accumulate personal growth as preparation for heaven.

Men are interested in men but usually get to know about each other through competition. The ultimate competition is war, the ultimate intimacy for men is war. How best do you get to know your opponent, you see how he fights. Men start wars. Peace will have to come from men then as well. We will need to get in touch with each other literally and figuratively, and it must find a peaceful means, this will be sexual and spiritual . Male to male attractions will have to overcome homophobia. James Nelson helps us take a look at that reality. He is honest and sound in his theology. You always like the works that you agree with especially when they offer you a new insight, new angle, new perspective, and scholarship your background does not afford you. Nelson's is a fresh work , easy read, yet has depth in his honest self disclosure. As peacemakers men will have to allow intimacy and physical intimacy will be a challenge for we seem to automatically link intimacy with genital sexuality. If we link intimacy with our spirituality we will see again the sexual. How do men learn to interact spiritually and sexually with each other and not genitally. Nelson raises the question and starts your thought but does not resolve the tension with a solution. But he serves us by helping us to acknowledge the nature of the problem of men getting to know men in meaningful not competative ways. Spirit, sex, homophobia, are well defined and he helps create a framework to move from, to move toward peace.

They also included Karl Hanke, a Nazi gauleiter who later succeeded Heinrich Himmler as the last Reichsfuehrer-SS. No historian has ever recognized the talented cast of characters who supported the Desert Fox in 1940. No one has ever attempted to tell their stories. This book will surely remedy that oversight.

During the Desert Fox campaign, the 7th Panzer suffered more casualties than any other division in the German Army, at the same time inflicting a disproportionate number of casualties upon the enemy. It took 97,486 prisoners, captured 458 tanks and armored vehicles, 277 field guns, 64 anti-tank guns and 4,000 to 5,000 trucks, and destroyed dozens of others in each category. It captured or destroyed hundreds of tons of other military equipment, shot down 52 aircraft, destroyed 15 more on the ground, and captured 12 more. It destroyed the French 1st Armored Division and the 4th North African Division, punched through the Maginot Line extension near Sivry, and checked the largest Allied counteroffensive of the campaign at Arras. When France surrendered, the Ghost Division was within 200 miles of the Spanish border. No doubt about it―Rommel had proven himself a great military leader who was capable of greater things. His next command, in fact, would be the Afrika Korps, where the legend of the Desert Fox was born.

This is one of the better books on FM Rommel,and his staff.I would Reccommend it very much.Good for the History technical buffs.Very good staff information

Only for the most dedicated researchers

I must admitt that I'm a fan of Mr Mitcham's works since he pays so much attention to detail and is so well informed on his subject. Unfortunately, the topic of this book is rather problematic because it covers only a couple of really important figures (Generals von Bismarck, von Zenger und Etterling and, may be, Hanke) the rest being officers who didn't distinguish themselves much in the following years of the war. There are though some good black and white maps, photographs of all the individuals discussed and a nice prologue which explains the political and military system that bred the kind of officers who led the Wehrmacht in astonishing victories in 1939-42. For the dedicated fans of WW II it may be worth the effort and the money, but the majority of the readers will find it rather difficult to force themselves to learn details about obscure German officers.

Not a book about the Battle for France

I was misled by the sub-title and hoped to find a book with some detail about the Battle for France. There is virtually none in here. Instead it is a very broad biography of officers who served under Rommel at some point. Many of them began their careers with Rommel in France, but that's where the link to the subject I bought the book for ends.
Therefore, if you're looking for brief biographies about generals who knew Rommel this is the book for you. If you're looking for a useful military history of the Battle for France you'll wish you hadn't bought this book. Like me.
