He grew up mostly in the Los Angeles area, lived in Mexico, and took part in the Chicano movement of the 1960s, finally moving to San Francisco in the 1970s. In this "creative nonfiction," he shares some wild stories of his family and his youth, giving us a zesty taste of Latino life. Not claiming to be a historian, he offers his personal take on significant events in the history of Chicano-Indio culture in California, such as the lynching of a Mexican woman during the California Gold Rush, the missions and their effect on Indian culture, and the activist 1970s in San Francisco. Murguia's spirited writing makes the past and his family come alive for the reader. Recommended for all libraries with collections in Hispanic culture, especially those in California.

This work is a great change of pace from a standard historical text

Well written history of a Mexica family. Through stories of his own family, Murguia interweaves a history of Mexica people in California. A fresh take on historical writings, Murguia makes the history personal. This work is a great change of pace from a standard historical text, but a reader will gain a breadth of knowledge of the historical period through reading this work. This purchase, by the way, was my second time buying this book. I gave the first copy away to a friend, since I found it such a great read.

Murguia, the poet laureate of San Francisco, delivers powerfully written memoir. His skills as a poet are evident in the elegance of the language as he explains his family's story. I read a lot of memoirs, and this one is in my top five favorite. I'm looking forward to reading it again soon.

Prominent American Indian activist Deloria, a Standing Rock Sioux, joins with Wilkins (American Indian studies and political science, Univ. of Minnesota) to deliver a shocking indictment of American constitutional law as it regards American Indians. In tracing Euro-American relations with Indians from the "discovery" of the New World to the present day, the authors demonstrate that legal and political definitions of Indian sovereignty and rights have been, and still are, incoherent and inconsiderate. As a result, the brief mentions of Indians in the U.S. Constitution have not been adequately defined in legal or moral terms, and no one has considered how current Indian nations fit into the American constitutional framework. The authors' structured discussion works well. But while theirs is a much-needed historical work, it misses being a thorough legal analysis of the many U.S. Supreme Court decisions that have stripped away even the slimmest constitutional guarantees. A very readable popular work that is perhaps not best suited for legal research.

A good starting place for the interested novice

This book is a good starting place for those just entering the world of Tribal Law. This a college freshman level book. Not for heavy-duty legal scholars. I like it because it shows the clear lineage of Treaties, the Constitution, and key US Supreme Court decisions from the earliest days (Colonial days) to now.

A great review of the history behind Federal-Tribal relations

Another classic book by Deloria. This book does an excellent job of documenting the evolution of Federal-Tribal relations, but doesn't fully follow through when positing a solution to high-level of dysfunction that exists in contemporary America (and has gotten worse since this book was published).

Fine work, bring it back to us

I first encountered this book at an evangelical seminary, where I took elementary NT Greek. I saw his chart of accented words that look similar(appendix 2), and wanted to see more of this book. This was not the book chosen for our NT Greek class. I wish that it had been. Jay's book is geared to preparing theological students that will be reading in Mark or the synoptic Gospels, and that is the vocabulary that you are provided with. The book we used was geared toward John, which of course is a good thing too. This book is longer, at 350 pages(including index), compared to just over 200 pages for the primer we used. "New Testament Greek" is quite a well written book, and will prepare whomever works through it for their next year in NT Greek very well. There is a key for the answers, too, for those who study alone, or without a teacher.

Jay has good comparisons of English grammar and Greek, so that you can better understand the two. He brings you beyond where many primers will, so that while you are introduced to the noun's vocative, nominative, genitive, dative, accusative forms, you also are given a good basic explanation of such things as agency and instrumental and locative uses of the dative. This is good, I think, because if you are reading in the Greek NT, then these things will come up and you will wonder 'How does 'to or for' fit with the way this word is used?

There are many details that are paid attention to, so that you are getting the benefit of having a good professor of NT Greek teach you, whether it has to do with prepositions, or time and place, or parataxis. Many of these seem not to be customarily covered in first year Greek. Jay seems able to present much without many words.

He also presents morphology, the 'build' of words, such as how a stem of a verb may change and show up differently as a noun, according to what we have observed of Greek phonology. .

There is rich illustration of the principles and points of grammar by Scripture verses, or phrases. I liked this about this book, about every subject he covers has several verses, or phrases in the NT, illustrating what he is getting at. Good job.

To me, this is an excellent primer of NT Greek, and it should be kept in print. I would say if every NT Greek student could have one, it would do them and the world much good.

Goes Beyond Introduction; Somewhat Advanced

My second year Greek teacher in Bible college recommended this text. I taught Greek in seminary using this text. It is just great. It does go more advanced than other introductory textbooks. In a way I favor Eugene Goetchius with its workbook for the very beginning student; but if the professor is up to presenting the morphological genius of Goetchius himself, this might be used for the elementary text. I actually used it with students who had already had a year of Greek and were coming back to school after a summer. Students can forget most of a first year Greek course over a summer! So I used this book which starts from scratch but has more depth for 2nd year students. It has useful exercises and an answer key was also published.

The Light Crust Doughboys are one of the most long-lived and musically versatile bands in America. Formed in the early 1930s under the sponsorship of Burrus Mill and Elevator Company of Fort Worth, Texas, with Bob Wills and Milton Brown (the originator of western swing) at the musical helm and future Texas governor W. Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel as band manager and emcee, the Doughboys are still going strong in the twenty-first century. Arguably the quintessential Texas band, the Doughboys have performed all the varieties of music that Texans love, including folk and fiddle tunes, cowboy songs, gospel and hymns, commercial country songs and popular ballads, honky-tonk, ragtime and blues, western swing and jazz, minstrel songs, movie hits, and rock 'n' roll.

In this book, Jean Boyd draws on the memories of Marvin "Smokey" Montgomery and other longtime band members and supporters to tell the Light Crust Doughboys story from the band's founding in 1931 through the year 2000. She follows the band's musical evolution and personnel over seven decades, showing how band members and sponsors responded to changes in Texas culture and musical tastes during the Great Depression, World War II, and the postwar years. Boyd concludes that the Doughboys' willingness to change with changing times and to try new sounds and fresh musical approaches is the source of their enduring vitality. Historical photographs of the band, an annotated discography of their pre-World War II work, and histories of some of the band's songs round out the volume.

About the Author

Randy Jones was the original cowboy in The Village People. The band, perhaps best known for hits like Macho Man and Y.M.C.A, sold 50 million albums, earned 45 Gold and Platinum record certificates around the globe, performed in worldwide tours, starred in its own camp classic film, and made the cover of Rolling Stone. Since leaving the band in the early 1990s, Jones has continued a career of stage acting and music performance. Since 2004, he has starred with Cathy Rigby in the musical Meet Me in St. Louis and also starred in two stage musicals in New York City, Sodom & Gomorrah: The Musical and I Want to Be Rosie, about the life and career of Rosemary Clooney. He debuted his solo act in Trump's Taj Mahal in 2005, and in the fall of 2006 released his first solo album in 20 years.

Mark Bego is a professional writer who has authored 45 books involving rock n' roll and show business, with two New York Times bestsellers, a Los Angeles Times bestseller, and a Chicago Tribune bestseller. Bego's subjects have ranged from Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Monkees, and Bonnie Raitt, to Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio. Bego also authored the Rock & Roll Almanac published in 1996. He has written articles for People, US, Cosmopolitan, Celebrity, and Billboard, was Editor-in-Chief of Modern Screen magazine from 1983 to 1985, and Film Editor for country music's Twang magazine in 1996 and 1997.

Each chapter is introduced by a prominent person who will someday lie at rest in the Texas State Cemetery, and an epilogue by Governor Rick Perry concludes the text. Interesting & Informational Book

This book has much more than just outstanding pictures, it has a wealth of information that cannot be found in the historical textbook pieces on the individuals buried at the Cemetery. Only someone such as Jason Walker could pen such a book, as no one has the breadth of knowledge of the Cemetery and role the inhabitants played in Texas history.

I love this book, but for the price expected more....more stories, more pictures, a more complete accounting of who is buried there. I go to the State Cemetery many times a year, and would have liked this book to be more a guide to visiting the cemetery.

Just went down and visited the State Cemetery. Didn't know the shortest highway in Texas is the entrance to the cemetery.
Go see for yourself. I saw the story on Bob Phillips TV show and was intrigued. Well worth the trip and then trek over to the
Elizabet Ney Museum.
