Very happy reader

I bought this book to get some natural history background before a 10-day backpack trip in Olympic National Park. The book is so fine I ended up carrying it with me. The information is vast and accurate, the writing is first-rate, the author's knowledge is deep, and his understanding and compassion for this special place are infectious. A MUST read for anyone interested in the Olympic Mountains and their unique natural heritage.

A good overview to a spectacular park

Olympic National Park rangers often recommend this book as the best overall guide to this intriguing wilderness region. With environments as diverse as wavespept Pacific coasts, glaciated alpine country and lush temperate rainforests, McNulty had his work cut out for him in capturing the essence of the Olympic Mountains. All in all, he has done an excellent job, hitting on these topics, as well as the human history and conservation issues of the region. I was disappointed with his coverage of the rainforests, whose stunning grandeur really deserves more than the brief chapter he gives them. To his credit,though, he concludes the book with an extensive bibliography that will satisfy anyone who wants to delve deeper. All in all, I would say that this book earns a home in the backpack or suitcase of anybody who plans on visiting this wonderful National Park.

Blood Lines: Myth, Indigenism, and Chicana/o Literature examines a broad array of texts that have contributed to the formation of an indigenous strand of Chicano cultural politics. In particular, this book exposes the ethnographic and poetic discourses that shaped the aesthetics and stylistics of Chicano nationalism and Chicana feminism. Contreras offers original perspectives on writers ranging from Alurista and Gloria Anzaldúa to Lorna Dee Cervantes and Alma Luz Villanueva, effectively marking the invocation of a Chicano indigeneity whose foundations and formulations can be linked to U.S. and British modernist writing.

By highlighting intertextualities such as those between Anzaldúa and D. H. Lawrence, Contreras critiques the resilience of primitivism in the Mexican borderlands. She questions established cultural perspectives on "the native," which paradoxically challenge and reaffirm racialized representations of Indians in the Americas. In doing so, Blood Lines brings a new understanding to the contradictory and richly textured literary relationship that links the projects of European modernism and Anglo-American authors, on the one hand, and the imaginary of the post-revolutionary Mexican state and Chicano/a writers, on the other hand.

Is it just that "there's nothing else to do," as some have suggested, or is there something in the character of Lubbock that encourages creativity as much as conservatism?

In this book, Christopher Oglesby interviews twenty-five musicians and artists with ties to Lubbock to discover what it is about this community and West Texas in general that feeds the creative spirit. Their answers are revealing. Some speak of the need to rebel against conventional attitudes that threaten to limit their horizons. Others, such as Joe Ely, praise the freedom of mind they find on the wide open plains. "There is this empty desolation that I could fill if I picked up a pen and wrote, or picked up a guitar and played," he says. Still others express skepticism about how much Lubbock as a place contributes to the success of its musicians. Jimmie Dale Gilmore says, "I think there is a large measure of this Lubbock phenomenon that is just luck, and that is the part that you cannot explain."

As a whole, the interviews create a portrait not only of Lubbock's musicians and artists, but also of the musical community that has sustained them, including venues such as the legendary Cotton Club and the original Stubb's Barbecue. This kaleidoscopic portrait of the West Texas music scene gets to the heart of what it takes to create art in an isolated, often inhospitable environment. As Oglesby says, "Necessity is the mother of creation. Lubbock needed beauty, poetry, humor, and it needed to get up and shake its communal ass a bit or go mad from loneliness and boredom; so Lubbock created the amazing likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Joe Ely."

Oglesby received his bachelor of arts and doctor of jurisprudence degrees from Texas Tech University. He lives and works in Austin.

If you're curious about how it all started, wonder why this little area of Texas produced some of the greatest artists of our time, you NEED to read this book. Some of the artists covered are geniuses only slightly this side of mad; they are all amazing and one could come to believe, as some do, that aliens may have landed in Lubbock and be among them. Or maybe it's just Buddy Holly's ghost. How else do you explain the wild whimsy of a Bruce Hancock, the incredible breadth of a Terry Allen, the ability of Jo Harvey to shake us by our socks? You'll love every page.

If you subscribe to the idea that certain areas of the world are natural conduits to creativity (and they're often the most UNLIKELY places on Earth), this book will definitely reinforce that notion. As a life-long Texan, I had no idea of the breadth of artistry that's emerged from the vast, desolate, seemingly limitless landscape that is Lubbock, Texas. Sure, I'd heard of Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, and the Flatlanders--what serious music lover in Texas or around the world hadn't? But to learn about this fountain of artists who may not be as well known yet have been just as prolific and, more importantly, just as influential--that was an eye-opener. It'll be one for you, too. If you love Texas music, buy this book. If you love music in general, or if you want an insight into the how the creative process is molded by a landscape, an environment, an ideal--buy this book. You'll come away informed, sated, but more importantly, curious. And it will open up a whole new avenue of inquiry for you. It did for me.

the other Texas music capital

having lived in texas for awhile, I enjoy the musical heritage of the lone star state and I am an avid reader of Texas Music magazine. Apart from Austin, which is undeniably one of the American musical capitals, the other nugget of texas is Lubbock and the lubbock area, birthplace of Buddy Holly. Lubbock is a unique place in that it's musical legacy is basically completely at odds with Lubbock, it's a musical legacy that is not only completely organic, but borne of a struggle for legitimacy for it's place.

the book is done in an interview format, and while some of the interviews are brutally honest and insightful, there are a couple that fall flat

A Refreshing Addition to Native History of Washington

Christopher Miller begins his book Prophetic Worlds by claiming, "Flagrant disregard for the complexities of human motivation has led us to credit our ancestors with godlike omniscience. This, in turn, has forced us to invent devious plots or to question the moral fiber of these people in order to explain why they did not act on their all-encompassing knowledge and behave as we think they should have." (p. 2) Such a statement sums up Miller's argument of his short book. He argues that models of western expansion based on the characters of the "ethnocentric settler" and the "noble and graceful Indian" are of no use to us anymore, being that the frontier is long since closed and all we have left is our post-modern conscience trying to explain what happened in a respectful way.

Miller is one of a new order of historians who are combining multiple fields of study to better understand our heritage. This multi-facetted view is used to explain ethnohistory. Ethnohistory is actually a compellation of history and anthropology that subscribes to methods of a literacist, an artist, an oral historian, and a scholar of mythology. Miller has adopted a form of ethnohistory to reinvigorate the story of the native-white contact of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries.

Miller has two objectives in his book. First, he wishes to better explain the importance of pre-existing conditions of the native landscape. Miller uncovers many interesting details of the pre-settler native society. He explains the "task group system" (a specialized labor system of sorts) and how it bound natives groups together through an economic system that seems to have pre-dated many tribal systems or systems of an Indian "nation" (in my experience, this idea is unique to this book). He explains how plagues swept through the Indian society leaving them weak, dissolved in numbers, and without a functional "task group system." This population and energy crisis caused native groups to support warrior-chiefs rather than diplomatic chiefs; and thus grew a class of warring and raiding tribes - the image that would be known by the white settlers.

Miller's second objective is to elevate the role of prophecy, oral tradition, and ideologies of both the native groups and the white settlers. Miller claims that "myths and folk stories can no longer be passed off as quaint stories dreamed up by the childlike imaginations of "primitives."" (p. 3) Miller highlights a particular prophecy told by a Columbia plateau people in response to a volcanic eruption in the west. There would arrive a new group of people, the prophecy went, who would bring a message and a book that would cause the native world to fall to pieces. Curious - It being that the native world had already began to fall to pieces (through plague and war) it is no surprise that the arrival Lewis and Clark (and the groups to follow) were both feared because of the prophecy and revered because of the hope that they would bring a new and better way of life. The whites had their own set of prophecies which were articulated by Jeffersonian progressivism and Judeo-Christian ideologies of man's role as a marshal of morals and God's will. Miller echoes the view of Carolyn Merchant, renowned historian of feminism and environmental perceptions. Merchant, like Miller in a way, argued that the western ideas born of the scientific revolution endowed the white man to believing he was to improve and conquer the wild lands of the west. This was personified through manifest destiny. The stage was set; a native society who was willing to accept the new way of life; the settlers who were prepared to tame the land and its' indigenous population (this of course was not always the case - something the 7th Calvary would learn many years later).

My only complaint of Prophetic Worlds is the author's reliance on "self-fulfilling prophecies" as historical characters and canals in which history had no choice but to follow. As historians, we are charged with explaining and documenting the past transgressions and human dramas and are not ourselves - "prophets." Labeling a fall or rise of a society or individual as a "self-fulfilled prophecy" coming to fruition is nearly as ambiguous a claim as the prophecies themselves and are too vague to ultimately explain anything. This aside, Prophetic Worlds is a refreshing new look at the drama of whites and natives in the west and would serve any historian or anthropologist looking for new ways to tackle catastrophic societal collisions.

Everything You Wanted To Know...

I am not a native Texan, but I love the place and so eagerly read anything to do with the state. While reading, I have often encountered references to the Cross Timbers region and the difficulties of traversing it in the 19th century and before.
In the past 20 years, I have had the good fortune to travel almost everywhere in the state and have seen the Cross Timbers close up, hiking in state parks or just passing through on back roads. I saw close up the thick gnarled forests interspersed with glades and prairie, but still wondered why the Cross Timbers were anticipated with a greater sense of dread than were other large forests in the country.
Enter "The Cast Iron Forest". In this informative tome, Richard Francaviglia will tell you everything you wanted to know about the Cross Timbers and more. In a very readable way, Francaviglia lays out just what the Cross Timbers are and proceeds through the history of the area right up to the present. The book not only gives the reader a great overview of the area, but also imparts understanding of patterns of settlement and the waxing and waning of both man and nature in this dynamic area.
I also learned that the Cross Timbers extend far beyond the borders of Texas into Oklahoma and Kansas. The author concentrates on the Texas portion, but gives some insight into the development and decay of Cross Timbers settlement in Oklahoma. However, very little is said about the small portion of Kansas that is a natural continuation of Cross Timbers geological and biological features.
I would have been happier had the book contained more detailed maps and charts, but overall I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the land and people of Texas.

It is a personal thing for me

I live and work in the Cross Timbers in North Texas and this book certainly captures the feel of the area. If you like a book covering the geology and the related flora an fauna of an area you will get a lot out of this work.

Once you read it and you live in an urban area you will be able to recognize its remnants - I have a big oak tree in my front yard that is a native tree found in the Eastern Cross Timbers on whose western edge my home and a former home are. And my office is in the Western Cross Timbers beyond Fort Worth. Hence, I live and have lived in it most of my life and thus the book is a very personal thing to me.

If you venture out past the sea of houses you will see the trees of "The Cast Iron Forest" still on guard below the clouds overhead. This is one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it.

A Unique Eco-Adventure Through Texas and Indian Territory

I was intrigued to learn recently that the general area of Texas in which I reside had (and still has to some degree) an eco-history all its own, which impacted both Native American tribes and the White settlers who were determined to "tame" the wilderness of the Lone Star State. This was not easy to accomplish, because of the two formidable belts of cross timber forest, which Washington Irving referred to in his writings as the "cast iron forest." These thick belts ran from a small corner of Kansas down through Indian Territory (now called Oklahoma), and continues to approximately where Waco, TX is located today.
Author Richard V. Francaviglia brings the reader on a journey through the cross timber regions, with a brilliant blend of natural history and Old West adventure-telling. The book features many old maps, which in their own fascinating way, also tell the history of the cross timbers visually. The author takes the reader on a journey from the opening of the West to the cross timbers - or what's left of it - in modern times.
One need not be scientifically inclined to read and enjoy this book, as Francaviglia explains all in a way which is easy to understand. Anyone with an interest in Texas history and/or ecology will find this a fascinating read!
