In Maya Political Science: Time, Astronomy, and the Cosmos, Prudence M. Rice proposed a new model of Maya political organization in which geopolitical seats of power rotated according to a 256-year calendar cycle known as the May. This fundamental connection between timekeeping and Maya political organization sparked Rice's interest in the origins of the two major calendars used by the ancient lowland Maya, one 260 days long, and the other having 365 days. In Maya Calendar Origins, she presents a provocative new thesis about the origins and development of the calendrical system.

Integrating data from anthropology, archaeology, art history, astronomy, ethnohistory, myth, and linguistics, Rice argues that the Maya calendars developed about a millennium earlier than commonly thought, around 1200 BC, as an outgrowth of observations of the natural phenomena that scheduled the movements of late Archaic hunter-gatherer-collectors throughout what became Mesoamerica. She asserts that an understanding of the cycles of weather and celestial movements became the basis of power for early rulers, who could thereby claim "control" over supernatural cosmic forces. Rice shows how time became materialized—transformed into status objects such as monuments that encoded calendrical or temporal concerns—as well as politicized, becoming the foundation for societal order, political legitimization, and wealth. Rice's research also sheds new light on the origins of the Popol Vuh, which, Rice believes, encodes the history of the development of the Mesoamerican calendars. She also explores the connections between the Maya and early Olmec and Izapan cultures in the Isthmian region, who shared with the Maya the cosmovision and ideology incorporated into the calendrical systems.

The late Bob L. Tipton was a businessman, author, and research associate at the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection at Texas A&M University.

Terry L. Hibbitts, a trained biologist, is an Honorary Life Member, past president, and current editor of the Texas Herpetological Society.

Troy D. Hibbitts, a high school science teacher, is also a past president and current member of the Texas Herpetological Society.

Toby J. Hibbitts is Curator of Herpetology at Texas A&M University’s Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection.

Travis J. LaDuc is Assistant Curator of Herpetology at the Texas Natural Science Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

good field guide

It is a good field guide for Texas Amphibians and presents the information in a well organized manner.
It does a good job covering the newer species described in Texas in the last few decades, particularly the subterranean salamanders.
The photos are a bit small for identification purposes, but there are good keys for those familiar with using them.

Great little portable field guide.

I am so glad this update is out. The book is very portable and chock full of info, the introduction is a must read for the naturalist. The taxonomic updates are nice to see and I very much appreciate the well researched range maps and how those are presented. Would recommend this to anyone interested in the topic.

For more than fifteen hundred years Yupik and proto-Yupik Eskimo peoples have lived at the site of the Alaskan village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island. Their history is a record of family and kin, and of the interrelationship between those who live in Gambell and the spiritual world on which they depend; it is a history dominated by an abiding desire for community survival.

Relying on oral history blended with ethnography and ethnohistory, Carol Zane Jolles views the contemporary Yupik people in terms of the enduring beliefs and values that have contributed to the community’s survival and adaptability. She draws on extensive interviews with villagers, archival records, and scholarly studies, as well as on her own ten years of fieldwork in Gambell to demonstrate the central importance of three aspects of Yupik life: religious beliefs, devotion to a subsistence life way, and family and clan ties. Jolles documents the life and livelihood of this modern community of marine mammal hunters and explores the ways in which religion is woven into the lives of community members, paying particular attention to the roles of women. Her account conveys a powerful sense of the lasting bonds between those who live in Gambell and their spiritual world, both past and present.

Brown struggled to find redemption for himself and his nation. His war on slavery and eventual execution would reap the whirlwinds that would herald the destruction of slavery. Beginning with events of 1776, Toledo provides the historical context of John Brown's war, enabling readers to approach this abolitionist visionary with a better understanding of the period that defined him. Toledo hopes to dispel notions that Brown was a mere fanatic or deranged militant. This work invites readers to become acquainted with a man who is, in the end, both flawed and heroic, always deliberate, and ultimately triumphant.

Great book for history (AND non-history) enthusiasts

Extremely well written book about John Brown and the history surrounding his life. The author brings the Civil War era (and Mr. Brown) to life, even to those readers who may not be particularly interested in this time period. Thumbs up. I am eagerly awaiting more works by this author.

An indispensable word-search instrument.

Even though all writers need constant access to a Dictionary and Thesaurus we still experience those wretched occasions when the right word simply will not come. Personally, I was unaware that a combined Dictionary and Thesaurus even existed until I came across this particular product at a car boot sale. Lucky me, in mint condition I picked it up for a song!

The Reader's Digest Complete Wordfinder is exactly that - the means of finding whatever elusive word is sitting at the back of your mind but simply avoids identification. Set out like a Dictionary, all words are listed and described as one would expect to find. I work in the area of Alzheimer's research and have often been asked to help family members with caregiving ideas. I will wholeheartedly recommend this book as it is written with amazing compassion and warmth. In fact, you don't have to be a person caring for someone with dementia. The lessons in this book are valuable for everyone (D-don't argue; A-accept; N-nurture yourself; C-create novel solutions; E-enjoy the moment). However when dealing with a dementia, these reminders are even more important.

This publication of this book could not have been more timely. Medical advancements and the aging baby boomers will result in families assuming greater responsibilities in caring for their relatives who are inflicted with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. McCurry extensive clinical experience is evident throughout the book. She provides very comprehensive advice in meeting the challenges that arise during the care giving process. Her first chapter explains why resilience matters, noting that it can improve quality of life for both the demented individual and his/her caregiver. Achieving resilience is then described through the D.A.N.C.E. program (D-don't argue; A-accept the disease; N-nurture yourself; C-create novel solutions; E-enjoy the moment). Each step is further illustrated by many clinical examples of individuals and families overcoming difficult situations. She encourages caregivers to give forth their best effort and be flexible in their approach. Her empathetic writing style offers encouragement to the reader and a sense of hope.

Dr. McCurry provides a complete list of resources that are available to caregivers. Professionals will find many ideas and techniques to help families stay involved with their loved one.

Whether it is through a friend, a neighbor, a spouse, a parent, or even ourselves, everyone will be affected by dementia at some point in their lives. In her book, Dr. McCurry helps us to understand the challenges of caregiving and the surprising joys along the journey through dementia. Most helpful are the specific techniques provided to help improve the quality of life for both the caregiver and the patient. It is obvious this book was written by someone who truly cares, and who understands how dementia affects us all. This book is a "must read" for all caregivers.

These oral histories bring to light the little-known story of a movement relegated to the sidelines of the civil rights struggle, fought by mothers from living rooms and church basements and won in the federal courts. Wonderful book

This is an excellent book which tells the story of emerging rights for people with developmental disabilities. It is told through the eyes of families that chose to not send their children to an institution. They needed better school programs, better laws, and better support for appropriate jobs and long-term, humane housing. These people didn't take no for an answer and banded together to make change happen. It is inspirational.
