About the Author
Scott Roberts has spent his life fostering a family heritage that began in Driftwood, Texas, more than 100 years ago and building on a dream he and his parents began in 1967 with the Salt Lick barbecue restaurant.

Jessica Dupuy has written for National Geographic Traveler, Texas Monthly, Texas Highways, and Fodor’s Travel Publications. She also coauthored Uchi: The Cookbook with James Beard Award–winning chef Tyson Cole.

Beautiful story book, not a cookbook.

My brother lived in Teaxs and raves about the Salt Lick.I bought the book hoping to recreate some of the recipes in the book. The description did state this was a behind the scene story of the restaurant with recipes. The book is a beautiful book with gorgeous pictures. However, the recipes were very few. Most of them are so basic i wouldn't even use them. Actually i think most of the recipes shown in the book do not appear to even be served in the restaurant. I hope my brother enjoys the book because of the memories it brings back to him. As far as i am concerned i collect cook books and have a couple hundred of them. This is not one that i would keep in my collection.

Wonderful but there are errors in some recipes

I loved this cookbook, which is more than a cookbook but a history of a wonderful part of Texas. Please be sure to check the Salt Lick's website to see corrections to some of the important recipes in the book - the most important correction is to the coleslaw recipe.

Beautifully Illustrated

This book is both a well written and beautifully illustrated memoir of the author's family, and a solid collection of barbeque recipes. I was able to preview this book, and could not be happier with it. A fascinating story of late 19th century Driftwood, Texas, and a great Hill Country cookbook!

The history of such a colorful, successful rock band as the British supergroup Queen ("Bohemian Rhapsody") is a story worth reading--but not as written by these amateur authors, the manager of the Queen Fan Club and the "archetypal 'superfan,' " respectively. Beginning with the birth of each band member, the book takes readers on a 45-year trek that ends with the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991. Unfortunately, the authors include everything , burying fascinating anecdotes (a tea party with Groucho Marx in 1977; the 1978 filming of 65 naked women on bicycles in Wimbledon Stadium to promote "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Race") under endless details. Few readers will want to know the musicians' high school grades or where the band changed planes on the way to a concert. On the other hand, they will want to learn more about the enigmatic Mercury, whose flamboyant camp act transformed four heavy metal musicians into skilled performance artists with worldwide popularity. Given the authors credentials, it isn't suprising that there is a certain bias--"the only thing the press concentrated on when writing up news of the opening of the world's biggest ever rock festival, was the 'near riot' . . ." The book does contain an impressive 35-page discography/videography, useful for music collectors--in 1991, Queen became the second most collectible band after the Beatles. Photos.

This is the kind of plodding, detail-oriented, homogenized narrative you would expect from the band's international fan club president and de facto discographer, positions held by authors Gunn and Jenkins, respectively. Mostly uninspired, this first significant Queen biography to be written under the aegis of the band could have benefited from more guidance. Until Freddie Murcury's AIDS-related death in 1991, Queen had literally conquered the world in terms of concert attendance, album sales, and artistic innovation during the group's 20-year career. Unfortunately, the narrative lacks the band's energy and sags under the weight of a this-is-the-band and, especially with regard to record chart activity, day-by-day approach. Still, anyone who can remember where he or she was upon first hearing "Bohemian Rhapsody" will probably love this work. Recommended where pop-music biographies are in demand.

There are two kinds of showbiz bio: the sleazy tell-all and the breathless tribute. This Queen chronicle is definitely of the second type. If you're looking to find out how Freddie Mercury contracted HIV, it's not for you. If you care about the band's formation and early appearances or the arduous process of obtaining a recording contract, though, it's a fine resource. Devout fans Gunn and Jenkins became privy to the group's inner workings, and although their book was not commissioned by Queen, the band gave them plenty of cooperation. But any criticism in itfor instance, when Gunn and Jenkins compare Queen's extremely familiar Bohemian Rhapsody to the ubiquitous Led Zeppelin warhorse, Stairway to Heavenis unintentional. So it's hardly surprising that Gunn and Jenkins also pay scant attention to the scary underside of the rock music business or to the sexual innuendos of the band's presentation. Perhaps the sleazy side of Queen will emerge in the next book on the band. Mike Tribby

For the most part, this book reads like a list of dates and locations. A lot of interesting details of the Queen story are left out. A casual fan of Queen's music won't find this very interesting. This one is for the true fans only.

Queen Rule The World!

The complete and virtually unabridged biography of the greatest band of all time is a must-have for any fan. It details the lifes of Freddie, Brian, John and Roger from their respective births, and leaves little out (apart from the malicious gossip that so frequently found in the tabloid papers about them).
The book is written by Jacky Smith (nee Gunn), the manageress of the Offical International Queen Fan Club (which is now the longesy running fan club of all time) and Jim Jenkins, a long time fan who was at most of the concerts Queen ever gave, so the authority from both people is a good one. You cane expect everything in the book to be completetly factual, and absolutley respectful to Queen and their families.

a pretty good shell guide

this book has it's good and bad points. It does cover lot's of shells found in Texas. It gives good scientific info as to each shells class and family.

My main areas that I was disappointed were:

1-the regions (city, county, beach) etc was NOT specific enough, as well as what would be the best time of the year of what region is best to find each shell.

2-no color photos! In my opinion-very important for different shell identifaction.

3-I was also surprised there was no section that gave an indepth guide to areas of high shell concentrations-where to find shells and when's the best time of the year to go look.

this is my only specifically Texas shell id book-but I have the idea that there are probably better ones out there. It may be that it's just an older book.

OK for the price (used here on Amazon) and a good "jumping off point" for Texas shell id. I will be looking for more, possibly better books though.

The dominant public figure in Brazil from 1930 until 1954 was a highly contradictory and controversial personality. Getúlio Vargas, from the pampas of the southern frontier state of Rio Grande do Sul, became the dictator who ruled without ever forgetting the lower classes.

Vargas was a consummate artist at politics. He climbed the political ladder through seats in the state and national legislatures to the post of federal Finance Minister and to the governorship of Rio Grande do Sul. His career then took him to the National Palace as Provisional President and as Constitutional President, and later as the dictator of his "New State." After his deposition in 1945 and a period of semiretirement, his continuing widespread popularity resulted in his successful come-back campaign in 1950 for the Presidency on the Labor Party ticket.

Vargas' contributions to Brazilian political and economic life were many and important. Taking advantage of the power which his political magic provided him, he brought Brazil from a loose confederacy of semifeudal states to a strongly centralized nation. He was a great eclectic, welding into his social, political, and economic policies what he found good in various programs. He was also a great opportunist in the sense that he adroitly took advantage of conditions and circumstances to effect his ends. He was intimately related to the revolutionary changes in Brazilian life after 1930.

Vargas, "Father of the Brazilians," attributed achievements such as these to power in his own hands. His foes, however, still feared the political wizard, and they cheered the military when it deposed him. After his return, "on the arms of the people," Vargas saw that the armed forces were determined to repeat history, and in 1954 he chose another path—suicide.

All of these exciting events are related in John W. F. Dulles's Vargas of Brazil: A Political Biography. Despite its emphasis on Vargas the politician and statesman, the reader comes to know Vargas the man.

For this portrait of Vargas and of Brazil the author has drawn much material from State Department papers in the National Archives and from other public sources, and from interviews with numerous persons who were participants in the events he describes or observers of them. The result is an interesting, revealing, valid account of an important people. Many illustrations supplement the text.

Had a great opportunity to see Dr. Carafano give a talk recently - always entertaining and enlightening - as is this book. In "Private Sector, Public Wars,” Carafano digs beyond the popularized understanding of contractor-as-merc to flesh out the real pros and cons of their utilization on and near the battlefield. Better still, he offers valuable insight into acquisition and oversight issues.

This absolutly should be on the shelf of anyone advocating or implementing related policy.

Thai Buddhism in a Historical and Social Context

This is a book which I :

(i) looked forward to reading (after reading the favorable reviews),

(ii) wasn't sure about the quality of the book half-way through reading it, but

(iii) was convinced that it is an important book upon finishing the final chapter.

Broadly, it is a book about Thai Buddhism in a historical and cultural context. It attempts to relate what Thai Buddhism was like before state-led reformations (which began during the rule of King Mongkut, 1851-68) changed the institution. The story told is very subtle - it discusses, amongst others, the role that monks played in the local Thai society during this period. The method that the author employs is very peculiar - the book reads like a personal narrative that is sourced from personal interviews (with senior surviving monks), written recollections by monks as well as 'farang' diarists. This approach, which I thought was almost akin to an oral history is, I think, inevitable given the form and availability of the information on the subject. This approach also makes the book very readeable and appealing as it manages to impart to the reader the feeling of how the past feels like. Stories surrounding the sometimes supernatural feats of monks wandering in forests adds a 'folklore' dimension to Buddhism as practised by Thais that I think is not often conveyed. The stories about individual monks were the ones I enjoyed reading the most. I cared less about 'farang' writings even though their observations sometimes proved informative. Not all the book is centered around Thai Buddhism. For example, the author discusses views on the status of women in Thai society towards the end of the book (chapter 43). The book is partly a social commentary about how Thai Buddhism and society have changed. I sense a tinge of sadness about these changes but the author does not quite say it outright whether the past reforms were mistakes. This is quite understandable, given the sensitivity of the issue due to the exalted status and high esteem in which past and present Thai kings are held. One of my favourite chapter is the last one - the tale of a Dutchman who stole a jade Buddha statue from a forest, only to return it later and to ultimately find the true meaning of life (as a Buddhist monk). The last few words of this chapter (uttered by the Dutchman) was, for me, very memorable: "All our European haste and disquiet has fallen away from me. I have come to realize that quite equanimity is the highest good that we can achieve in this life". Tiyavanich certainly knows how to choose her words very well. This is a book which I read and savoured slowly - one to two chapters daily, every night, before I slid into pleasant dreams. Tonight, upon finishing the book, I lament the fact that I will need to find another good read tomorrow night.

A great, informative book

Dr. Tuttle has set out to redeem the reputation of the bat clan and if people would just read this book I believe he would succeed. This book is packed with information that will help dispel the fear and misunderstanding with which people view bats, but at the same time it is by no means too technical to be readily understood (I first read it when I was about fourteen iirc and enjoyed it as much then as I do now.) I would recommend this book to anyone anywhere who is the least bit interested in nature and also to anyone who is fearful or concerned about bats in their nieghborhood.

Merlin Tuttle: America's Neighborhood Bats

This is a very informative, well wriiten and beautifully photographed book on bats. The book includes beautiful color photographs of the most commonly seen bats in America. One of the most appreciated sections is the "Beginners' Key To American Bats", a well written, easy to comprehend section on identifying common bats of the region and placing them in their proper groups. Very important if you intend to build bat houses and hope to attract occupants and just general knowledge.
The book includes several other interesting chapters besides identification. It shows how bats navigate with radar. It addresses the many negative myths of bats, it explains how beneficial bats are in nature. If you want or need to know anything at all about these interesting creatures, THIS is the book and Merlin Tuttle is the expert to seek out. And even if you only need to know enough about bats to humanely evict them from your belfry, this book comes with even that information!
The author has dedicated his life to these interesting mammals. Even without knowing that fact, you can see from the entertaining way Mr Tuttle writes, how much he cares. All of his books are excellent. Check them all out!

Wonderful book!

I bought this book just because I was curious about bats. I had always thought they were "bad", until I visited a conservatory in Wyoming that had a bat house and explained how important they are. That was a surprise to me.
This book opened my eyes to how beneficial bats really are. It talks about the facts, myths and misconceptions about bats... what's true, what's not. It tells what to do if a bat comes into your house, and how to evict them if they have taken up residence in your attic or somewhere else you don't want them to be.
The book is well-written and an "easy" read. It has lots of good photos, and tells about some of the different species of bats and where they live. I recommend it for older children (maybe 10 and up) and adults. Well worth the money.
