An interesting reference
By N. Lee
I picked this book up on a whim, and although I'm not really disappointed in it, I'm not exactly ecstatic either. I've always been fascinated with unexplained phenomena, and I appreciate that this book takes a fairly objective view of many so-called "supernatural" events. I really liked the first half or so, probably because I'm interested in folk tales and legends and there's a nice cross-cultural representation. The book even gives some explanations for certain events, or admits that as yet no one knows how or why some things occurred.
My one complaint is that some of the entries could have been a little more in-depth. This is great as a reference book -- useful for getting a quick overview of an event or phenomena, but really only leads you into further questions to research.

excellent and readable overview from a MODERATE prospective
By Charles E. Meadows
This book is a brief and readable analysis of the OT writings from a literary and cultural viewpoint. I would respectfully disagree with the prior reviewer that the author is a liberal. Gibson is definitely a moderate; believing in the truth and inspiration of the bible but yet willing to acknowledge that the printed words are limited by the intellectual resources of those who wrote them as well as by the characteristics of the Hebrew language in which they were written. This book is excellent for those Christians who believe that Scripture IS the word of God - but who need a little more than some of the nonsense explanations given to harmonize what the Bible says with what we see. Let's face it, the OT is a difficult body of writings - neither written as nor meant to be read as a simple bedtime story.

A fine intellecutal guide to the Old Testament
By Bert Ruiz
Author J.C.L. Gibson is a fine scholar. To that end, this publication successfully nurtures a better understanding and appreciation of the Old Testament. Moreover, Gibson offers an easy writing style that offers many insightful observations that helps unlock the complexity of the language in the Old Testament.
I found Chapter one, "The Energies of the Hebrew Language," and Chapter three, "The Rhetoric of Hebrew Prose Writing," helps foster a greater appreciation of the ancient imagery and language in the Old Testament. I must admit to being only a moderate reader of the Old Testament and to having struggled over and over penetrating the secrets of the language. Hence, I found "Language and Imagery in the Old Testament" to be an excellent companion to the Bible.
Admittedly, the Old Testament is deep and open to many interpretations. Consequently, not everyone will agree with all of Gibson's conclusions. However, I have found Gibson's scholarship to be comprehensive, objective, inspiring and a good faith effort to improve our understanding of the many mysteries in the Bible.

helpful introduction to the Bible as literature
By David A. Baer
Even if John C.L. Gibson admits that the OT is "capable of causing not a little embarrassment to the two religions which have adopted it as their Scriptures", he finds it also "seductive", "moving" and "illuminating". His little book is meant to guide the reader to fuller appreciation of the latter qualities and in this he must be judged to have succeeded. His first of seven well-written chapters, entitled "The Energies of the Hebrew Language", presents the lack of abstract terms and the linking together of clauses by "and" as the "two basic characteristics of biblical Hebrew." The picture is filled out by several not unimportant features: prominence of direct speech, cosmological descriptions of heaven and Sheol, the extravagance of Semitic address, folk etymologies, figurative language, hyperbole, personalisation, irony, et al. Throughout this chapter Gibson indicates the considerable distance which separates theological language from that of the OT.

In ch. two ("Language about God in the Old Testament"), Gibson approaches the (non-)problem of anthropomorphism by way of the recognition that all theology is metaphorical. Faced with such incautious expression, the point is to understand rather than to approve. A discussion of the incomparability of Yahweh (closer to heno- than mono-theism) rounds out the chapter. Full-blown monotheistic statements such as Isa 43.10 represent "the exaggeration of faith" rather than systematic theology, since so much of the OT refuses to evacuate creation of other "theologically real" gods.

Ch. three ("The Rhetoric of Hebrew Prose Writing") asks us "Why Prose?", a question occasioned by the paucity of ANE precedent. En route to a tentative answer in terms of narrative theology, Gibson guides us through such features as composite authorship, reticence, the resonance of key words, and characterisation by what the protagonists say, here and there pausing to criticise the "fissiparous tendencies" of "excavatory scholarship", too full of sources and too deaf to accomplished story-telling.

After sketching out the basics of metre and parallelism, ch. four ("The Rhetoric and Melodies of Hebrew Poetry") explains and illustrates the rhetoric of judgement, comfort, praise, lament, confident wisdom, and questioning wisdom. Gibson allows us his own evaluation of aspects of biblical poetry, whether this be his appraisal of Proverbs ("too smug by half"), his suggestion that Christian poetry is more preoccupied with sin and confession than that of the Psalms, or his traditional conclusion that Job's "redeemer" (19.23ff.) must be God himself.

Gibson's ch. five ("The Rhetoric of Hebrew Myth") mounts an apology for the genre, whether its toned-down priestly variety in Gen 2 or the less restrained mythic voice of the psalms and prophets. Israel's mythology has points of contact with that of her neighbours, but Israel's experience of God in her own history produced a unique "standard of judgement". Gibson's reading of the second Yahweh speech in Job is an illuminating attempt to beat back the modernisers and rescue this divine soliloquy for the genre.

The second half of the book's title becomes the focus of its last two chapters (six, "Images of God"; seven, "Images of Humanity"). Sustaining the point that images-like all God-talk-are metaphorical and suggestive, Gibson cites texts which illustrate the principal ones (king, judge, father [and mother], redeemer, et al.). Refusing to be drawn in theological directions-though perhaps not entirely-Gibson concludes that such images tell us how Israel conceived of God, not how he is in himself: "The time for knowing him is not yet, but in another life." Similarly in his discussion of human imagery (e.g. "knowledge of good and evil", "human creatureliness"), Gibson's avowedly empirical survey of OT language and imagery ends with an expression of the chastened faith which this literature so often evokes (p. 154).

Honky Tonk Hero, by Billy Joe Shaver

Willie Nelson says "Billy Joe Shaver may be the best songwriter alive today," and legions of fans agree that Billy Joe is the real deal. Many describe his songs as pure poetry. Shaver sings about a life that's been full of hard times, wild living, and a forty-year-long passion for his late wife Brenda. His songs are raw, honest, and so true that people hear the story of their own lives in his music. No wonder, then, that his songs have also been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Patty Loveless, John Anderson, Tom T. Hall, the Allman Brothers, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Tex Ritter.

In this compelling autobiography written with the assistance of Brad Reagan, Billy Joe Shaver looks back over a life that some might call a miracle of survival. His father abandoned the family before Billy Joe was born. Troubles in school and in the military turned him into a fighter, and a sawmill accident claimed two fingers and part of a third on his right hand. Yet his innate musical talent and the encouragement of an English teacher set him on the road to being a songwriter—and he never looked back. Shaver recounts his long struggle to break into the music business in Nashville and the success that came when Waylon Jennings recorded his songs on the 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes, which became a landmark of outlaw country music. Shaver movingly describes his own thirty-year, up-and-down career as a singer-songwriter in Nashville and Texas, his bouts with alcohol and drugs, his pleasure in touring with his son Eddy and their band Shaver during the 1990s, and the pain of losing Eddy, Brenda, and Billy Joe's mother all within the year 1999-2000.

As full of life, heartbreak, and drama as any of Billy Joe Shaver's songs, Honky Tonk Hero is the story of a man who not only walked on the wild side and lived to tell about it, but also got it all down in songs that many people consider to be some of the finest country music ever written.

Bonds and Bondholders: British Investors and Mexico's Foreign Debt, 1824-1888, by Michael P. Costeloe

Within a few years of their liberation from Spanish rule in the 1820s, several of the new Spanish American republics floated loans in London's financial market. All the debtor nations, from Mexico to Chile, had defaulted within five years, a situation which resulted in their exclusion from European capital markets for much of the 19th century. Most studies of such debt approach the subject from the debtor's viewpoint, some arguing that the British government was an economic imperialist. Concentrating on Mexico, this book provides an important corrective, focusing on the creditors, the individual investors who risked their money to buy bonds. These investors ranged from country clergy to politicians of the rank of Benjamin Disraeli.

Thousands of investors lost their money due to Mexico's persistent defaults and failure to pay the promised dividends. They were represented by the Committee of Mexican Bondholders, a London based organization established in 1830 to negotiate a settlement of the debt with the Mexican government. Almost sixty years of futile discussions followed, with the debt rescheduled on several occasions until the final settlement in the 1880s. Costeloe analyzes the negotiations, the bond issues, the identity of the bondholders, the activities of the Committee, and the attitude of the British government. By concentrating on the creditor, he brings a new perspective to the whole issue of Third World or foreign debt in the 19th century.

Review
"The wealth of information on the identity of British bondholders and how committees acted on their behalf recommends this book as a welcome addition to the literature. Of interest also will be the great number of primary sources used which offer the specialist a rich resource for further research: financial journals, committee reports, newspaper accounts, photographs of actual bonds and bondholders, and other various prominent archival material."-Enterprise & Society

"An excellent work of historical research full of hard-to-find information, this book should be in the collection of any library, public or private, that attempts to cover nineteenth-century Mexican and British finance history."-Albion

"The details of Mexican debt history provided by Costeloe do constitute an addition to the literature and certainly will prove quite useful for future economic historians interested in extracting analytical mileage from the documents and materials consulted."-EH.NET

Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen (Jewish Life, History, and Culture), by Ira B. Nadel

Known as the "Prince of Bummers," Leonard Cohen is a multi-talented poet, singer-songwriter, novelist, and Zen Buddhist whose career has spanned more than forty years and inspired countless other artists. In this critically acclaimed biography originally published in 1996 by Pantheon Books, Ira Nadel draws on extensive interviews with Cohen, as well as excerpts from his unpublished letters, journals, notebooks, songs, and other writings, to offer a full portrait of this enigmatic man and his artistic career. A new concluding chapter brings Cohen's story up-to-date, including the release of the albums Dear Heather, Ten New Songs, The Essential Leonard Cohen, and Blue Alert, as well as the publication of Book of Longing and the screening of the documentary film Leonard Cohen, I'm Your Man.

From Publishers Weekly
The flamboyant life of Canadian singer/ songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen (b. 1934) is given straightforward treatment in this authorized biography by Nadel, a book reviewer for the CBC and professor of English at the University of British Columbia. The chief virtues of the book are its thorough research and its honesty. Clearly an admirer of Cohen's work, Nadel is unstinting in his depiction of his subject as one who has "led a life of unfettered romance, largely free of obligations or responsibility." From Cohen's precocious childhood in the Jewish community of Montreal through his years as one of Canada's most promising young poets, to his intermittent career as a sort of lugubrious rock star?"the prince of bummers"?the artist comes across as egotistical, charming, dilettantish and moody, swinging wildly between vainglory and self-pity. He was an improbabale singer: even Cohen compared his voice to a bumblebee?in theory it shouldn't fly, but it does. The melodrama of his life seems manufactured to fit his gifts as both singer and songwriter, but these talents are difficult to evoke in prose, and Nadel isn't likely to convince anyone who isn't yet a fan of Cohen's abilities. The faithful, however, will light scented candles as they follow the well-traced turns of the artist's life. Photos.

From Library Journal
Canadian poet/singer/songwriter Cohen has had an unconventional career, culminating in pop music stardom at the age of 54. Nadel expands on his earlier Leonard Cohen: A Life in Art (ECW Pr., 1994) and updates Loranne S. Dorman & Clive L. Rawlins's Leonard Cohen: Prophet of the Heart (Omnibus Pr., 1990) in this biography, which was "benignly tolerated" by Cohen, whose somber songs have been described as "music to slit your wrists by." Nadel used interviews with Cohen and his friends and extensive excerpts from his prose, poems, letters, and lyrics to reveal insights into Cohen's enigmatic life and career. Obsessions with beautiful women, bouts of depression, and an ascetic exploration of Zen Buddhism are all recounted. Occasional factual errors (e.g., Nadel implies that Judy Collins composed her Joni Mitchell-penned hit "Both Sides Now") do not prevent the book from being the most authoritative work yet on the "poet laureate of pessimism." Recommended for popular music collections of public libraries.?Lloyd Jansen, Stockton-San Joaquin Cty. P.L., Cal.

From Booklist
Leonard Cohen was once a familiar figure on the pop music scene. Some held that his monotone delivery and the ethereal lilt of his verses made him a rock and roll troubadour or a modern Shelley. Others found him a mopey old poet trying to co-opt rock for the usual rewards: money, drugs, and chicks. Perhaps both views were right, but now that his ubiquity has passed (heard "Suzanne" much lately?), it's easier to see him as an artist of some depth and intensity. He was already an established novelist and poet when he started recording in 1967, so Nadel's study is fittingly more a literary than a rock bio--quiet of tone, serious without being worshipful. Drawing on Cohen's own archives, Nadel plots aspects of Cohen's life--Zen, love affairs, drug use--against the evolution of his writing. He fashions a biography that is revealing but also remindful of its subject at his best. Mike Tribby

Scratches the surface but draws little blood
By h,s (s h)
The book is readable -- not exciting but not an academic drudge either. This is important because Cohen, as opposed tothe book, is not so readable. On the other hand Cohen is such an interesting chap, and such an remarkable modern literary figure, that any decent book about him, including this one, is going to be intersting.

The book overall follows the biographic customary timeline of past to present, starting with ancestors a few generations back. However, within any few pages Nadel jumps in time more than Billy Pilgrim, so one minute you might be reading about something that happened in 1975 and a few later you're reading about something in 1969 and in a few more pages and it's 1978. It's often necessary in a biography, while discussing events in one period, to reference related matters from another period. A biographer like, say, Marion Meade, handles this sort of thing with aplomb. In Nadel's book, while sometimes there seems to be a thematic point underlying Nadel's schenanigans with the timeline, at worst it is unnecessarily confusing and at best it is disruptive. Another draft was in order.

Generally, the farther back in the past the book reaches, the more info it has to offer, and the overall effect of the book is to leave you wanting more information, especially about the last 30 years of Cohen's life. E.g., Nadel tells you in a few sentences that Cohen was recently defrauded of millions of dollars, his life savings, but doesn't say anything about how the swindle took place -- did Cohen by a time share on Mars? was Cohen preoccupied while someone simply ransacked his bank accounts? And afterword was added a few years ago to catch up on what's happened since the book was written. This add-on is presented as an "afterword" but is more like a footnote in large type, as it briefly rushes through several years of some very important events, leaving off with the noting that a tour is being planned for 2007 -- which, of course, we now know turned out to be the biggest and best received tour, worldwide, of Cohen's career. A better afterword would have taken some time to add an actual chapter or two or, in lieu of further research and writing. One might have hoped that Footman's newer biography with the obvious title, Leonard Cohen: Hallelujah: A New Biography, (slated for publication in November 2009) would take care of this, but alas , does not.

Nadel does a good job of tracing familial and academic roots and associations, which helps to show how key they are to Cohen and his work.

On the other hand, on a thematic level, Nadel repeatedly tells the reader that Cohen is depressed and suffering (big surprise if you read his poems, prose or heard his songs), but you don't really get anything new on why he's depressed or what he's suffering from -- except for this: he likes women but isn't comfortable being "tied down" -- Well, a song or too and you could figure that out. You do learn the names of folks in Cohen's life, including those mentioned or alluded to in songs or poems. You also are told often that Cohen used drugs but you never really get a good idea how much or how often -- as spaced out as Carrie Fisher? potted as Betty Ford? comfortably maintaining the appearance of sobriety like Dick Van Dyke, or just a chronic dabbler?

Nadel does go some distance to tie together Cohen's lifelong interest in Judaism and decades long interest Zen. And that might be the most depth that the book has to offer.

You will know more about Cohen, including more details, after reading this book, but you probably won't feel like you've read the definitive account of Cohen's life and career. But Cohen is such an interesting chap, and such an remarkable literary figure, that any decent book about him, including this one, is going to be intersting.

If you are interested in Cohen, the book is worth a read. However, you may very well feel that you have better understanding of Cohen from his poems, novels and songs than from this biography, which ain't necessarily a bad thing.

Merchant Capital and Islam, by Mahmood Ibrahim

The rise of merchant capital in Mecca conditioned the development of Meccan social, economic, religious, and political structure. Mahmood Ibrahim traces the roots of capitalism from the emergence of merchants as the main force in Mecca through the first civil war in Islam (656–661). Through a rereading of original Arabic sources and drawing from modern scholarship on the subject, Ibrahim offers a new interpretation of the rise of Islam.

He argues that Islam contributed certain institutional beliefs and practices that unblocked obstacles and helped merchants gain political and economic hegemony over western Asia. Ibrahim contends that, with the conquest of Mecca, the newly formed Muslim state spread its control to the rest of Arabia, which mobilized a significant social force and allowed for further expansion outside Arabia, thus extending merchant control to include new surplus-producing regions, a vast network of trade routes, and wider markets.

This extensively researched study offers a new interpretation of the history of Islam, including the formation of Islamic society and the unfolding of the first civil war. In offering a better understanding of the Umayyad Caliphate that ruled Islam for a century to come, Ibrahim helps lay the groundwork for understanding the Middle East as it is today.

Of interest to scholars of Middle Eastern studies, this important work will be necessary reading for students of Near Eastern and North African history, as well as students of the history of Medieval Europe.

Sky Train: Tibetan Women on the Edge of History, by Canyon Sam

Through a lyrical narrative of her journey to Tibet in 2007, activist Canyon Sam contemplates modern history from the perspective of Tibetan women. Traveling on China's new "Sky Train," she celebrates Tibetan New Year with the Lhasa family whom she'd befriended decades earlier and concludes an oral-history project with women elders.

As she uncovers stories of Tibetan women's courage, resourcefulness, and spiritual strength in the face of loss and hardship since the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1950, and observes the changes wrought by the controversial new rail line in the futuristic "new Lhasa," Sam comes to embrace her own capacity for letting go, for faith, and for acceptance. Her glimpse of Tibet's past through the lens of the women - a visionary educator, a freedom fighter, a gulag survivor, and a child bride - affords her a unique perspective on the state of Tibetan culture today - in Tibet, in exile, and in the widening Tibetan diaspora.

Gracefully connecting the women's poignant histories to larger cultural, political, and spiritual themes, the author comes full circle, finding wisdom and wholeness even as she acknowledges Tibet's irreversible changes.

Starred Review. In her remarkable book, writer and activist Sam examines the stories of varied Tibetan women-displaced aristocrats, impassioned freedom fighters, educators, and others-united in their desperation to reclaim their country. Over a period of years, Sam recorded stories of life under Chinese occupation, visiting her subjects by China's new "sky train." A third-generation Chinese-American, Sam also chronicles her own experiences in Tibet throughout the narrative, skillfully mimicking readers' slow discovery of the country in its many dimensions. Though complicated politically, Sam handles Tibet's dilemma with knowledge and grace, addressing the larger history of Tibet to reveal a beautiful, subtle culture that's as rich as it is foreign. At no time does Sam sugarcoat the effects of Chinese occupation on the people or the land, rendering human rights issues in terms of intensely personal experience. Visceral and deeply felt, this narrative deserves a read from anyone interested in human rights and the untold stories of oppressed women everywhere. 30 illus.

Review
"…perhaps the most innovative book written on Tibet that I have come across…. Canyon Sam writes eloquently and lyrically about her experiences in Tibet…a tender, personal insight into the spirits of the Tibetans in the face of the near extinction of their culture."―Turning Wheel

"This is a book that will make you weep."―Japan Times

"As a woman talking to women, Sam uncovers a much more intimate Tibet, which survives stubbornly in a tattered land. The passage of time between the interviews gives their testimonies both richness and preciousness..captures the heart-rending complexities of Tibet and China and how close to home they can be."―San Francisco Chronicle Book Review

Review
"Canyon Sam's Sky Train powerfully moves the heart, as it brings to life deep truths about our world today, about Tibet, the land and people and especially its outstanding women. Just as important is the author's own revelatory discovery of 'Tibet' as a compassionate, wise, and down to earth state-of-mind essential to the survival of the whole world. Words cannot express how wonderful is this honest, generous, and perceptive book."―Robert Thurman, Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Buddhist Studies at Columbia University

"Years ago following her ancestral roots to China, but finding instead Tibet as a spiritual home, Canyon Sam made a miracle of a journey. Now in Sky Train she guides the reader on a life-changing adventure back to Tibet after more than twenty years and an epoch of cataclysmic change to produce a miracle of a book."―Maxine Hong Kingston, author of The Woman Warrior

"A book that is sure to illuminate a Tibet so many of us have been longing to know."―Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple

"Through the experiences of older Tibetan women, the author offers a captivating journey spanning half a century and several countries. Sky Train conveys women's lessons of community-building, generosity, faith, and determination. A beautiful, moving, riveting book."―Valerie Matsumoto, UCLA

"This book about the Dharma of connection, of companioning, of compassion, has strengthened my own devotion."―Sylvia Boorstein, author of Happiness Is an Inside Job: Practicing for a Joyful Life

"It is Canyon Sam's love for Tibet―its culture and its people―that makes this book so special. An important work . . . poignant and inspiring."―Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness

Beautifully written, compelling, heartbreaking, but also vastly entertaining. Canyon takes us with her on a recent train journey to Lhasa while recounting the stories of four incredible women whose lives were radically altered by the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

Much is told in this book that has not been chronicled before, thus, it is a must-read for anyone interested in the story of Tibet.

I could not put this book down.

All of us involved in the struggle to restore Tibet to its rightful owners, the Tibetan people, owe Canyon a tremendous debt of gratitude for writing this incredible and beautiful book. May it give us all renewed courage and strength to continue to fight the good fight. Bhod rangzen! Free Tibet!

a passionate and beautifully written book
By G. Kirk
This amazing book takes readers on many journeys. On a 4-day train trip from Beijing to Lhasa we disembark in the heart of the 50-year Chinese occupation of Tibet. We accompany the writer across Tibet, India, Switzerland, Canada and the US to hear, with her, the untold stories of remarkable Tibetan women who survived shocking ordeals, sustained by their physical and spiritual strength. We also share Canyon Sam's inner journey to Buddhism, her activism on behalf of Tibetans in exile, and to a deeper understanding of her Chinese American heritage. By the end of this passionate and beautifully written book, I was in awe of the Tibetan women who, despite extreme hardships, continued to find hope and meaning in their changed lives. I'm also in awe of the writer who devoted many years to getting these stories into print. Her love and respect for the women she interviewed shine out as she deftly guides us, so we see why their struggle became hers.

Empire, Architecture, and the City: French-Ottoman Encounters, 1830-1914, by Zeynep Celik

Winner of the 2010 Spiro Kostof Award (sponsored by the Society of Architectural Historians)

Empire building and modernity dominate the history of the nineteenth century. The French and Ottoman empires capitalized on modern infrastructure and city building to control diverse social, cultural, and political landscapes. Zeynep Celik examines the cities of Algeria and Tunisia under French colonial rule and those of the Ottoman Arab provinces. By shifting the emphasis from the “centers” of Paris and Istanbul to the “peripheries,” she presents a more nuanced look at cross-cultural exchanges. The different political agendas of the French and Ottoman empires reveal the myriad meanings behind remarkably similar urban forms and buildings. This lavishly illustrated volume makes numerous archival plans, photographs, and postcards available for the first time, along with reproductions from periodicals and official yearbooks.

Roads, railroads, ports, and waterways served many imperial agendas, ranging from military to commercial and even ideological. Interventions changed the urban fabrics in unprecedented ways: straight arteries were cut through cities, European-style quarters were appended to historic cores, and new industrial and mining towns, military posts, and administrative centers were built according to the latest trends. These major feats of engineering were carefully planned to construct a modern image while addressing practical concerns of growth and communication.

Celik discusses public squares as privileged sites of imperial expression, as evidenced by the buildings that defined them and the iconographically charged monuments that adorned them. She examines the architecture of public buildings. Theaters, schools, and hospitals and the offices that housed the imperial administrative apparatus (city halls, government palaces, post offices, police stations, and military structures) were new secular monuments, designed according to European models but in a range of architectural expressions.

Public ceremonies, set against modern urban spaces, played key roles in conveying political messages. Celik maps out their orchestrated occupation of streets and squares. She concludes with questions on how the various attitudes of both empires engaged cultural differences, race, and civilizing missions.

Review
"Ambitious in scope, marvelously conceived, meticulously researched, and generously illustrated, this book . . . an exemplary work of comparative scholarship on imperial urbanism, one that challenges us to consider that similarities between and within empires were greater that their apparent differences."―Preeti Chopra, Buildings and Landscapes, Spring 2012

"Zeynep Celik's new book masterfully weaves together urban and architectural studies with cultural and intellectual history in what will stand as a key contribution to the study of imperialism and modernity. . . . A testament to the merit of this book is the range of questions it provokes and will likely continue to provoke for some time."―Journal of the American Oriental Society

"Zeynep Celik's elegant and insightful study, Empire and the City is a model of brilliant scholarship and complex cross-cultural analysis. Thanks to her subtle handling of a rich array of archival materials, and to her thorough analysis, Celik points us toward a deeper understanding of a lost world of empire and aspiration, and toward a clearer vision of 'modernity.' Empire and the City tells a compelling story―it is a milestone of scholarship and a terrific read."―2010 Spiro Kostof Award Committee, on awarding the prize from the Society of Architectural Historians

"Celik provides important lessons for those who see our present condition as absolutely unique to our own time. In some ways Empire, Architecture, and the City allows us to look at globalization as a further destabilization and diffusion of the concept of empire―one that is perhaps no longer connected to concepts of space and place, but that nevertheless still reflects an unequal distribution of power that is infinitely more pervasive than it was in the past and that is tied to larger and more numerous imperials interests."―American Historical Review

"A timely study that provides significant insights into pressing debates about modernity and imperialism, Empire, Architecture, and the City should enjoy a broad audience within and well beyond the fields of urban and architectural history. Celik's book offers a refreshing counterpoint to the prevailing monographic focus on individual cities of much recent urban history, particularly studies focused on imperial and colonial situations. While this book is certainly essential reading for scholars of the French and Ottoman empires, it has much to teach all historians of the modern period interested in better understanding the far-reaching and still on-going consequences of nineteenth-century imperialism."―H-Net

Review
"In her remarkably researched study, Zeynep Celik not only constructs an innovative parallel between a dwindling empire and a developing one, but she also sheds light on the mutual observation policies of Turkey and France. Empire, Architecture, and the City sets new standards in the study of colonial city planning and building design, challenging accepted views on European domination, thanks to a precise comparison of the agents and ideologies at work."―Jean―Louis Cohen, Sheldon H. Solow Professor in the History of Architecture, New York University

"Empire, Architecture, and the City is very original for its in―depth comparison of the Ottoman and French empires in Arab regions, their political policies, and architectural and ceremonial symbols. The comparison turns out to be an effective way of explaining common themes and variations, mutual influences, and the differences between the empires."―Ira M. Lapidus, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley

"This is an extremely significant project since it fundamentally questions and, through its judicious deployment of extensive data, demonstrates that the old binary of East versus West, Islam versus Christianity, can not historically be defended."―Julia Clancy―Smith, Department of History, University of Arizona

Account of the Fables and Rites of the Incas (William & Bettye Nowlin Series in Art, History, and Culture), by Cristóbal de Molina

Only a few decades after the Spanish conquest of Peru, the third Bishop of Cuzco, Sebastián de Lartaún, called for a report on the religious practices of the Incas. The report was prepared by Cristóbal de Molina, a priest of the Hospital for the Natives of Our Lady of Succor in Cuzco and Preacher General of the city. Molina was an outstanding Quechua speaker, and his advanced language skills allowed him to interview the older indigenous men of Cuzco who were among the last surviving eyewitnesses of the rituals conducted at the height of Inca rule. Thus, Molina's account preserves a crucial first-hand record of Inca religious beliefs and practices.

This volume is the first English translation of Molina's Relación de las fábulas y ritos de los incas since 1873 and includes the first authoritative scholarly commentary and notes. The work opens with several Inca creation myths and descriptions of the major gods and shrines (huacas). Molina then discusses the most important rituals that occurred in Cuzco during each month of the year, as well as rituals that were not tied to the ceremonial calendar, such as birth rituals, female initiation rites, and marriages. Molina also describes the Capacocha ritual, in which all the shrines of the empire were offered sacrifices, as well as the Taqui Ongoy, a millennial movement that spread across the Andes during the late 1560s in response to growing Spanish domination and accelerated violence against the so-called idolatrous religions of the Andean peoples.
