Becoming Neighbors in a Mexican American Community: Power, Conflict, and Solidarity, by Gilda L. Ochoa

On the surface, Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants to the United States seem to share a common cultural identity but often make uneasy neighbors. Discrimination and assimilationist policies have influenced generations of Mexican Americans so that some now fear that the status they have gained by assimilating into American society will be jeopardized by Spanish-speaking newcomers. Other Mexican Americans, however, adopt a position of group solidarity and work to better the social conditions and educational opportunities of Mexican immigrants.

Focusing on the Mexican-origin, working-class city of La Puente in Los Angeles County, California, this book examines Mexican Americans' everyday attitudes toward and interactions with Mexican immigrants—a topic that has so far received little serious study. Using in-depth interviews, participant observations, school board meeting minutes, and other historical documents, Gilda Ochoa investigates how Mexican Americans are negotiating their relationships with immigrants at an interpersonal level in the places where they shop, worship, learn, and raise their families. This research into daily lives highlights the centrality of women in the process of negotiating and building communities and sheds new light on identity formation and group mobilization in the U.S. and on educational issues, especially bilingual education. It also complements previous studies on the impact of immigration on the wages and employment opportunities of Mexican Americans.

Review
"What makes this book remarkable is the quality of the in-depth, ethnographic data the author acquires and uses to provide revealing insights into how both Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants experience the often rough road to mutual understanding and respect. This is a must read for anyone interested in Latinos, immigration, culture and social change, and the future of Califormia and the nation." (The Americas)

"...a masterful study that offers significant implications for the lives of Latinos all over the country." (American Journal of Sociology)

"This book offers a provocative analysis of how ethnic identity is constructed and explores the significance Mexican ancestry plays in the lives of Mexican Americans. . . . It is an authoritative text." (Martha Menchaca, Professor of Anthropology, University of Texas at Austin)

Lessons in Being Chinese: Minority Education and Ethnic Identity in Southwest China (Studies on Ethnic Groups in China), by Hansen M H

Two very different ethnic minority communities―the Naxi of the Lijiang area in northern Yunnan and the Tai (Dai) of Sipsong Panna (Xishuangbanna), along Yunnan’s border with Burma and Laos―are featured in this comparative study of the implementation and reception of state minority education policy in the People’s Republic of China. Based on field research and historical sources, Lessons in Being Chinese argues that state policy, which is intended to be applied uniformly across all minority regions, in fact is much more successful in some than in others.

In Lijiang, elite members of the Naxi ethnic group (minzu) have a centuries-old connection with Chinese state educational systems as avenues to social mobility, and have continued this tradition under Communist rule. They participate enthusiastically in the present system, using education to gain official and professional positions. In contrast to the Lijiang area, Sipsong Panna functioned in many ways as a separate kingdom until 1950, with its own script and a separate educational system centered in Theravada Buddhist monasteries. Today, many Tai in that area still prefer monastic education for their sons, and most parents are indifferent to state education.

This study finds that standardized, homogenizing state education is in itself incapable of instilling in students an identification with the Chinese state, ironically often increasing ethnic identity. Lessons in Being Chinese enhances our understanding of how state policy toward minorities works in many areas of life, and its conclusions can be extended well beyond the sphere of education. It will be of interest to both anthropologists and educators.

"This is a critical as well as comprehensive study of minority education and ethnic identity in a southwest province of China: the Yunnan province. . . . This is a very informative work and a very substantial piece of research on minority education in China. It is a must read for people who want to know about the details, the intricacies, and the hidden agendas of education for minorities in China."―Journal of Asian and African Studies

"This book is especially relevant in these times when assimiliationist educational projects in minority communities are debated as human-rights issues in countries as different as Canada and Taiwan. [Hansen] provides much-needed discussion and empirical data on these issues in a fascinating province of the People's Republic of China."―China Review International

Carlos Lacerda, Brazilian Crusader: Volume I: The Years 1914-1960, by John W.F. Dulles

Playwright, journalist, and spectacularly successful governor, Carlos Lacerda was Brazil's foremost orator in the 20th century and its most controversial politician. He might have become president in the 1960s had not the military taken over. In the words of eminent historian José Honório Rodrigues, "No one person influenced the Brazilian historical process as much as Carlos Lacerda from 1945 to 1968."

In this volume, the first of a two-volume biography, Professor Dulles paints a portrait of a rebellious youth, who had the willfulness of his prominent father and who crusaded for Communism before becoming its most outspoken foe. Recalling Lacerda's rallying cry, "Brazil must be shaken up," Dulles traces the career of the journalist whose unsparing attacks on the men in power led authorities to imprison him and employ thugs who pummeled him physically. The story covers events in which Lacerda helped alter Brazil, such as the redemocratization in 1945 and his revelation of scandals in high places in the early 1950s. An unsuccessful attempt by government men to murder him in 1954 led to the suicide of President Getulio Vargas in 1954.

Lacerda's spirited oratory helped him become Brazil's most popular congressman, but it scared the rulers of Brazil and they prohibited the broadcast of his speeches after he returned from exile in 1956. Their effort to deprive him of his mandate stirred the entire nation and culminated in one of the most dramatic sessions ever held in the Chamber of Deputies.

Dulles, who knew Lacerda well and had access to his papers, sheds light on Lacerda the man, ardent in courtship and in all his undertakings, intellectually restless, and scornful of routine and mediocrity. Lacerda had a vitriolic pen that made bitter enemies, but, as disclosed in these pages, his courage and incorruptibility attracted an enthusiastic following, evident in the landslide election victories that brought him seats on Rio de Janeiro's city council and in the federal Congress.

Some of the best-known modern painters in the American Northwest, the artists Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson have been called the leaders of a 'Northwest School' since the 1940s. But a detailed investigation of their interactions from 1930 to 1954 shows the perception of these four artists as a cohesive group to be a myth. "Northwest Mythologies" offers a new analysis of their interactions and accomplishments, and places their art and ideologies in the larger context of American modernism. Although the four artists exchanged ideas and shared common interests, they were close friends and colleagues for only a few years around the time of World War II. Each experimented with stylistic elements admired in the others' painting, yet they produced distinctive, widely ranging bodies of work over their long careers. What fundamentally united these artists was their philosophical approach to artmaking, one that rested on humanism and their passionate belief in art as a moral pursuit. Constructing a chronology from letters, interviews, and new analyses of their works, "Northwest Mythologies" re-examines the careers and complex friendships of Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson, and explores their different understandings of what it meant to be an artist. This book is the first study of the four painters to finely articulate their differences and achievements, and it presents a new view of their place in American art. Bolívar and the War of Independence, by Daniel Florence O'Leary

The overthrow of Spanish rule and the birth of new republican governments in northern South America at the beginning of the nineteenth century were in large part the work of one man—Simón Bolívar. Bolívar was not only the soldier who built a patriot army from a small band of exiles and led them victoriously across Venezuela and down the spine of the Andes as far as Potosí; he was also the statesman who framed the new republics that sprang to life after the defeat of the Spanish and who called the Congress of Panama in hopes of making real his dream of uniting all the South American republics in a single confederation. He was truly the Liberator.

The Narración, or narrative, of the Memorias of Daniel Florencio O’Leary has long been recognized by Spanish American scholars as one of the most important historical sources for a major part of Bolívar’s life. O’Leary took an active part in the wars for independence, first as a young officer, recruited in the British Isles to aid the patriot cause, and later as Bolívar’s chief aide, often entrusted with diplomatic missions. His firsthand knowledge of the stirring events of the period, his access to relevant documents, and his close association with the major figures in the struggle, as well as his friendship with Bolívar, made O’Leary a particularly valuable chronicler and biographer. Bolívar himself, shortly before his death, requested that O’Leary write the story of his life.

O’Leary’s meticulous attention to military and diplomatic maneuvers and his keen, sometimes acrid, comments on both men and events give the reader not only a vivid portrait of Bolívar—the man and his achievements—but also a remarkable insight into O’Leary’s own position as an autocratic-minded participant in the wars for independence. Although O’Leary’s devotion to, and admiration for, his Chief make for an occasionally partisan view, his stark account of the hardships and disappointments that Bolívar and his armies overcame against almost impossible odds does much to balance the narrative.

In his abridged translation, Robert McNerney has omitted the Apéndice, documents that O’Leary, had he lived, undoubtedly would have used as the source for completing his account of Bolívar’s life. Numerous letters and documents scattered through the original text also have been omitted, leaving a highly readable narrative.

Review
"These Memoirs of O'Leary ... are without a doubt the best work ever published in the English language on the life and deeds of Simón Bolivar, the great Liberator of five South American countries.... The book is full of interesting vignettes, where O'Leary with great candor and sincerity virtually takes the reader by the hand into the inner sanctum of the great Liberator... a thoroughly enjoyable, condensed version." (Inter-American Review of Bibliography)

Interesting history of South America and Bolivar
By Jack
Well written and educational history of the wars for South American independence. I wasn't sure what to expect with a history written by an Irishman in Spanish and then translated into English, but it reads well. A credit to Mr. McNeary.

For someone not familiar with the geography of Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia and Peru, the progress of the wars and the battles will be very difficult follow since many locations were liberated from the Spanish, recaptured by the royalist, re-liberated several times as the fighting progressed. The cruelty and atrocities of the Spanish, and at times revolutionaries added a dimension to the conflict that may surprise some readers.

The intrigues and the interplay of the principals gives a better insight to how difficult the wars of independence were, especially when comparing them to the American Revolution.

Masterful Study of the Viking Age
By Thormod Morrisson
This book easily earns the right to be among the foremost textbooks on the Viking Age. A comprehensive study that covers the various levels of Norse society from thralls to jarls, karls and kings. Northern laws are particulary covered well and the varied crafts at which the Northmen excelled: smithcraft, trade, battle, ship building and sailing. There are also very good sections on Viking art and verse. A stand-by book for any serious Norse scholar.

An outstanding introduction to Viking Age culture
By gunnora@bga.com
"The Viking Achievement" is an outstanding introduction to the culture and history of Viking Age Scandinavia. It includes information on laws, society, families, warfare, armor and weapons, archaeology, ships and trade, art, literature and poetry, religion and mythology. The information is carefully based on the scholarship provided by scientific archaeological research and modern literary analysis.

Perfect.
By J. Boland
I was looking for a general reader's, accessible book on Viking life. Every aspect of it. This book delivers. I have been a student of history throughout my formal education but have never been drawn to the Viking Age (except as peripheral players in the lives of other civilizations) and decided to remedy that as I am a fan of the television seres. his is readable, assumes little prior knowledge on Viking history and, well, it was just perfect.

Xiaoyuan Hanyu responds to the practical needs of college students with a text that presents natural and idiomatic Chinese along with concise English instruction. Originally developed at the University of Washington, it has been used successfully at Middlebury College and other institutions for over a decade. This first published edition incorporates enhanced typography, streamlined organization, new exercises, a complete glossary, and includes an audio CD of the Chinese texts. The authors are native speakers of both Chinese and English.

Sixteen lessons introduce vocabulary for discussing topics of concern to college students, such as finding a place to live, registering for classes, resolving cultural misunderstandings, and visiting a professor’s house. Sections centered around clusters of new vocabulary items guide the student through reading and writing exercises while simultaneously reviewing previously introduced words and patterns. Oral exercises provide opportunities to use and practice the new material. Grammar and usage explanations and exercises further prepare the student for reading the lesson’s main text (kewen), an extended passage that uses the new vocabulary and grammar. Each lesson ends with a series of homework assignments.

I had to use this book for my high-intermediate Chinese course. I honestly wasn't a fan of this book, since it seemed a little chaotic and hard to follow. My teachers skipped many sections in each chapter.

The grammar explanations aren't very helpful, so if you plan to use this to study on your own, it may be difficult.

Some of the texts are interesting, but for the most part they're a little odd.

Just Like New
By shaqbry
I ordered it with prime and it did not ship within two business days like they said it would. I called the company and that issue was resolved. So I got the book later than expected, about 4 or 5 days later. The characters are kind of small in the book and there seems to be a lack of structure in the book so far. Hopefully I grow to like the book over the semester. I have no choice but to use this textbook. The only plus is the book was like brand new.

Arabian Oasis City: The Transformation of 'Unayzah (Modern Middle East (Paperback)), by Soraya Altorki, Donald P. Cole

Vast social change has occurred in the Middle East since the oil boom of the mid-1970s. As the first anthropological study of an urban community in Saudi Arabia since that oil boom, Arabian Oasis City is also the first to document those changes.

Based on extensive interviews and participant observation with both men and women, the authors record and analyze the transformation that has occurred in this ancient oasis city throughout the twentieth century: the creation of the present Saudi Arabian state and of a new national economy based on the export of oil and the economic boom brought about by the dramatic increases in the price of oil following the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War. In addition, the authors reveal the changes brought about by the fall in the price of oil beginning in 1982 and analyze the problems confronting ‘Unayzah in its aftermath.

By demonstrating that the area was not exclusively dominated by tribalism and Bedouin nomads, this empirical case study destroys stereotypical views about Saudi Arabia. Indeed, it proves the existence—prior to the coming of the modern Saudi Arabian state— of surplus agricultural and craft production and the full development of local, regional, and long-distance trade networks. It shows that women, although veiled, played active roles in work outside the household. The social impact of change over the years is, however, profound—especially the gradual replacement of the extended family by the nuclear family, changing patterns of husband-wife relationships, the impact of self-earned income on the status of women, and the emergence of a new middle class of employees and entrepreneurs. Because of the high degree of gender segregation in this area of research, Altorki and Cole give us a fortunate collaboration between a Saudi Arabian female scholar and an American male scholar experienced in research in the Middle East.

Very informative and well researched study
By Amazon Customer
This book reports on a study the 2 authors did in Unayzah, a mid-size city in central Saudi Arabia. The study was particularly well planned in that the authors, an American man and a Saudi woman, were able to combine the views of both outsiders and insiders, men and women into a single seamless whole. Through interviews with local people, the authors present a history of the development of Unayzah from an agricultural and market center before oil wealth to the city it is today. They describe the early transport industry and the work women did in agriculture and the market as well as the longstanding importance of education in this city. They also describe the tremendous changes that have taken place since oil wealth, particularly with the importation of foreign labor and the construction of modern housing in new areas. Early in the book, the authors suggest that they will make a distinction between "transformation" of economy/society and "development". As the book unfolds, they do not focus on arguing for this distinction explicitly, although many facts gradually build to support their case. Descriptions of changes in family life in Unayzah present some interesting comparisons of the pros and cons of abandoning or adapting tradition in favor of "modern" customs. This book is a must for anyone who would like to learn more about modern Saudi society.

The Paris of the Nedj...
By John P. Jones III
...was an accolade given to Unayzah in 1924 by a Lebanese writer and advisor to Ibn Saud, Amin Rihani. I heard it in a more expansive sense, no doubt due to inflation, many years later, as the Paris of Arabia. And no less a (Western) authority on Arabia from his travels there in the 19th Century, the curmudgeonly Charles Doughty, said that he spent the "one good day" of his travels in Arabia in Unayzah.

This is a very remarkable book, along several different dimensions. First of all, that it was written at all. It is the result of a partnership between a Saudi woman, and an American man, both of whom are sociologists. They had studied and taught at the same universities. Soraya Altorki's family was originally from Unayzah, which was key for obtaining authorization to conduct the study. Still, in a society in particular in which there is much skepticism towards the motives of the inquiring stranger, that permission itself is a remarkable achievement.

I had to gulp hard on the first page as the authors began to differentiate between "transformation" and "development" and knew that "modes of productions" and associated jargon could not be far behind. After all, this IS sociology, and the tone of the book is excessively flat and scholarly. But if the reader is willing to adjust to this mode, s/he should be richly rewarded. Because the authors tell a remarkable story, yes, a "transformation" in one city in central Arabia, debunking many common myths like the Arabs always eschewed manual labor. Their reasons for this study is explained in the introduction, and resonated well with me: "...for letting the people tell much of the story in their own words, derives from our reaction to much of the literature that has been published on Saudi Arabia in recent years. Quite a lot has been written about society in Saudi Arabia by foreigners who happened to live there but who were not social scientists. Much of this has been anecdotal at best and often inflammatory and misleading. More serious are the writing of social scientists who have either never been to the country or have only briefly visited some of the main cities."

In terms of "telling their own story," I found the stories told by Abu Talib, an 88 year old, on pages 76-80, who traveled throughout much of the Middle East during and after WW I, and Abu Ziyad, on page 175, who had lived in Europe for seven years, and returned to Unayzah for his health particularly well done. Ms. Altorki enabled the stories of the women to also be well told, from their days working in agriculture to their current work as school teachers and their experiences in socializing, via "coffee klatches" and more.

The central aspect of the book, a description of the "transformation" of this city from an agricultural base, supported by long-distant traders, where education is admired, to the current (1989) state where the old lines of work and trading disappeared, and government employment was providing, along with new housing, compliments of the "tufrah," the "oil boom," was accomplished admirably. I agree with their assessment on page 120: "changes of such vast proportions in such a short time have probably never occurred in any country during times of peace."

There are a few points I wish I could query the authors on: there was no mention of anyone refusing to participate in their study; there was also no skepticism that what they were told was not true, for example, on page 128 they seemed to accept the assertion that the maids "do not play an important part in childrearing." As is now known here in the American Southwest, sometimes the Indians, tired of being "specimen studies," would embroider tales for sociologist's consumption. No doubt the authors would claim that it was "beyond the scope of this study," but a contrast of the outwardly looking and "liberal" Unayzah with insular, and extremely conservative Buraydah, only 20 km away, on the north side of Wadi Al Rimmah, was never done, nor even alluded to. Truly a fascinating subject for a follow-up study. And perhaps understandably, a description of the part that religion played in the lives of the Unayzah's citizens was minimized; thereby avoiding controversy, yet the reader is poorer in his/her understanding. And I felt the authors was overly pessimistic concerning the future, as though they actually had internalized the constant predictions of many of the West that the day of collapse is always 2-3 years away.

On a personal note, during the days of the electrification of Qassim province, almost 30 years ago, my wife and I were once shown around Unayzah, its old homes, its date production, et al., by one of the community leaders who beamed pride in Unayzah's history and accomplishments. That evening we ate chicken, and drank "Bebsi" in a "sidewalk café" watching the traffic pass, and pondered the differences between Unayzah's openness and insular Buryadah. And we thought it was better to be in Unayzah than the real Paris. Cole and Altorki have done much to explain what we did not understand at the time.

Sadly, this illuminating, solid factual account of those in the very heartland of Islam is currently selling with a rank in the millions at Amazon, whereby the books that promote a fantasy view of this country and religion are always much better sellers. You don't have to be a sociologist to ponder what does this say about ourselves?

Solid Saudi Study Sets Standard
By Bob Newman
The media images of Saudi Arabia concentrate on camels, dunes, huge crowds of pilgrims at Mecca and Madinah, and large installations dedicated to the oil industry. Outsiders see almost nothing of Saudi life (though we hear a lot about women not being able to drive, chopping of heads etc.) Without much tourism, without films that tell about life there, without any Saudi neighbors (I've met one Saudi in my entire life and that was 45 years ago), a book like ARABIAN OASIS CITY can provide a major change in the way you view the country.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the area that would become Saudi Arabia still moved in traditional ways. It had never been much part of the larger empires that rose and fell in the Middle East. The appearance of the kingdom that became known as "Saudi Arabia" (in the 1920s) meant a gradual changing of the society and economy. Up to the 1930s and the beginning of oil production, change proceeded slowly. The two anthropologist-authors here interviewed many people (in the 1980s) who could remember those times very well. Through their memories, plus the straightforward writing of the authors, who do not embellish their text with jargon or footnotes, a picture emerges of a very stable society devoted to agriculture, animal husbandry, and trade. Farmers raised wheat and 30 kinds of dates on land that they owned or leased (some leases ran even to 500 years, surely one for the Guiness Book of Records !) Many craftsmen practised their trades and men drove herds of animals up to Syria or Palestine for sale. Both women and men sold produce and various craft items in the bazaar. Women also worked on farms as laborers. A network of trading/merchant families lived in many parts of the Arab world and even in India, expediting business for the people back home in `Unayzah, the central Saudi city that is the focus of this study. We look at family patterns, levels of indebtedness, and the market as a center of social and political interaction. "For a very long time and until not too long ago, `Unayzah had a complex economic structure and its population had a high degree of occupational specialization. It was a center tied into various networks that operated locally, regionally, and at an international level." (p.81)

Having established what once existed, the authors spend the rest of the book telling what happened as Saudi Arabia transformed itself thanks to the flow of oil money that became a flood after the oil price rise of the 1970s. We may say that five major changes occured. They investigate each thoroughly---secular education, new technology and new infrastructure, salaried employment especially in the government, the arrival of a vast, cheap workforce of expatriate laborers, and a cash economy. These affected family life, friendship patterns, male-female relations, daily behavior, expectations of the future, and attitudes towards nearly everything, especially work. The sub-title given to the book, "the transformation of `Unayzah" is thus very accurate. The research was done by a man and a woman working in tandem but separately in accordance with Saudi mores. The result is satisfying if you are looking for a descriptive work on how Saudi society has changed over the years. There is little or no theoretical content, little relating to the vast body of anthropological research that has gone on over the years. Some books err in having too much theory and not enough content. Not this one. The authors make a vague nod in the direction of theory with a discussion of a "rentier" model gleaned from several works, but only in the last ten pages. Frankly, it seems to be tacked on to what othewise is a solid descriptive work. They want to make the point that the present avoidance of manual labor by large parts of the Saudi work force is a function of the economic conditions prevailing since the `boom' of the 1970s and not something that is traditional in any way. I would say in conclusion that this book must be read by anyone who is concerned with Saudi Arabia or the changing societies of the Middle East. And, I think, that should include nearly everyone !
