The life an times of Puerto Rican Brujas. Witches.

This is probably the first and single most important book on Puerto Rican Espiritismo and Brujeria (Witchcraft) as it is practiced on the island. The book does not just only give you an anthropological look into Brujeria, but also the history on how it probably started out on the Island as well as how Taino, African and Spanish Catholic influences has changed the face of Brujeria and Espiritismo in Puerto Rico.
The book also introduces Haydee, La Numero Uno Bruja de Loiza. :The Number One Witch-Healer of Loiza, Puerto Rico." The author takes you into the mind of a modern bruja, and their practices. It also gives you how Cuban Santeria and its pantheon of Orisha Spirits has been intermingled and embraced into its cosmology. Topics on Curanderismo and Kardecian Spiritism are also spoken about.
This is an important book for all Puerto Rican who are looking for their identity within Espiritismo, Santeria, Curanderismo or Brujeria. Haydee "may she rest in peace" may have lived a life that many have not approved on, she may have been a hypocrite to others, but she was honest, she had nothing to hide. Not to the author of the book and especially not to any of it's readers. For that alone I enjoyed its sincearity, and I can Highly recommend this book.

Engagingly written ethnography and history of brujeria

This volume offers an engagingly written ethnography and history of brujeria (witch-healing) as practiced on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. Romberg argues convincingly that brujeria is not a marginal or exotic practice, but an active partner of contemporary Puerto Rican consumerism and the welfare state. The book concludes with an insightful discussion of the nature of magic and an exposition on the quest for "authenticity" in contemporary Caribbean religions. Recommended. Stephen D. Glazier, Professor of Anthropology, University of Nebraska.

Raquel and Haydée

Romberg has written an excellent book on the history of the belief and practices of Espiritismo as it exists in Puerto Rico. What makes this book more special is the fact that she wrote it both as an observer and student. As an observer because it was to be her dissertation for her doctorate and as a student because the individual she chose to work and learn from, Haydée Trinidad, entrusted Ms Romberg with her knowledge and expertise feeling strongly that her gift could be passed on to capable hands. The book seamlessly alternates between the late Ms Trinidad's practices and instructions and reference material that Ms Romberg researched in Puerto Rico and Washington. If for anything else, I think this is an important document about Puerto Rican culture whether you believe in Espiritismo or not. As to Ms Romberg's attitude? I like the quote she inserted in the book's introduction when she asked someone if they believed in Espiritismo. The answer was, "I don't believe in it...but it works." Anyone interested in Spirituality or New Age should have this book on his/her shelf--a wonderful and heartfelt dedication to the spirit of Espiritismo and the legend that was Haydée Trinidad.

The American government later reciprocated with an autographed photographic portrait of the president. The essays in Objects as Envoys contextualize and explain the broader significance of this exchange, deftly interweaving discussions of cloth production, international diplomacy, and popular representations of Madagascar and the Malagasy people in Europe and the United States. Together they tell a fascinating story of the people and history of this island country.

The first two essays provide a comprehensive survey of Madagascar's textiles, past and present. They examine the importance of cloth to the Malagasy, both as creative works of art and as objects imbued with great social and cultural significance. From simple cotton wrappers and raffia work shirts to delicately textured, vibrantly colored silk lama, textiles--the quintessential Malagasy gift--have been used in Madagascar to mark ethnic and gender identity, to indicate status and power relations, to create and renegotiate social ties, to serve as tribute to the dead, and to promote diplomatic overtures to foreign nations. When used as envoys, however, objects are likely to acquire new meanings, as recipients re-interpret and use them according to their own cultural understandings.

The little-known history of American-Malagasy ties is explored through the compelling biography of John Lewis Waller, an African American born into slavery who, as the American consul to Madagascar from 1891 to 1894, both supported Madagascar's independence and dreamed of establishing an all-black colony there.

The exchanges--and also the misunderstandings--that have characterized the meetings between Madagascar and Western nations and peoples are further examined through a study of the ways in which 19th-century photographs and other visual images were used by Westerners to create stereotypes of the Malagasy and by the Malagasy themselves to create and project identities of their own choosing.

About the Author
Christine Mullen Kreamer is a curator at the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution. Sarah Fee , a research collaborator at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, has been conducting field research on weaving and social life in Madagascar since 1988 and is co-founder of the Tandroy Ethnographic Museum in Berenty, Madagascar. Other contributors include Zina Andrianarivelo, Mary Jo Arnoldi, Shirley E. Barnes, Christraud M. Geary, Edgar Krebs, Jean-Aimé Rakotoarisoa, and Wendy Walker.

Unique in its focus on the work of a single designer's treatment of mostly contemporary residential interiors, this book was written to accompany an exhibition held at the Bellevue Art Museum in Seattle. Jongeward, called the "doyenne of the Northwest style," began her professional life as a Minnesota journalist after attending the University of North Dakota. Arriving in post-World War II Seattle, she worked in the interior design department of the Frederick and Nelson Department Store before becoming architect Roland Terry's assistant. There she began to develop her own decorating style, which combines an appreciation of Asian art with the Northwest's tradition of using nature as a design inspiration. This chronicle of Jongeward's life and work through text and photographs is especially recommended for regional collections.

Up Against the Wall: Re-Imagining the U.S. – Mexico Border, by Ed Casey and Mary Watkins, is an important work that sheds light and sparks much needed conversation on the topic of the border wall between Mexico and the United States and its far reaching effects on the environment and those bodies that encounter it. As these two authors recount their own reflections and encounters with the wall, we are called on to review and re-view the very terminology we use to describe La Frontera in order to re-think our interaction, to remember our shared histories, and to re-imagine a very different future guided by “transborder ethics” and a “politics of hospitality.”

Part I of the text, written by Ed Casey, invites us to re-view La Frontera and the terminology we use to characterize it. Beginning with definitions of border, boundary, and edge we see the inherent ambiguity that the wall at La Frontera holds. We are then invited to reflect on the two’ing that occurs at the border, to see el otro lado, the other side, taking Ambos Nogales as a case study. Establishing this theme of twoness, we are then guided by the authors through reflections of the way in which the border inhabits the very flesh of those who live in the areas surrounding La Frontera. Using Casey’s conception of ecotones we can see what being at the border requires. By “looking both ways at the border” and its function as border and boundary, we are enabled to clearly see both of its sides.

In part II of the text, penned by Mary Watkins, we are invited to use our newly cultivated double vision to look at the wall “both ways.” This looking both ways calls us remember. To remember the shared but forgotten historias, histories and stories, of the legacies of internal colonialism, as well as the devastating and ongoing effects of “Juan Crow.” In the chapter “The Souls of Anglos” we are shown that the effects of the struggle at La Frontera are not limited to our Mexican neighbors, those of Mexican heritage, and the immigrants that make their way across to the US. The wall at La Frontera has profound effects on the souls of Anglos, too.

Up Against the Wall, a truly decolonial text, serves as an invitation and solicitation to re-imagine the border, to Anglos and Mexicans alike. We glimpse the ways in which such a re-imagining and re-creation might be possible with Watkins’ descriptions of the creative acts of resistance taking place at the border in the form of border wall art and performances. We as readers are called upon to imagine and engage in a transborder ethics, to acknowledge our shame and accept our complicity in the holding up of the wall in the hopes that we might to instead turn to a radical politics of hospitality. With their text, Casey and Watkins open up a space to re-imagine the future at La Frontera, a future in which the healing of la herida abierta, the open wound, is possible.
