Her investigation broadens the community of Chicana lesbian writers well beyond Moraga and Anzaldúa, while it also demonstrates that the histories of Chicana lesbians have had to be written in works of fiction because these women have been marginalized and excluded in canonical writings on Chicano life and experience.

A Wonderfully Written, Accessible, Fascinating Book

Catriona Rueda Esquibel's book is a superb exploration of Chicana (and more broadly defined, Latina) lesbian literature and culture. She has an engaging style, and even incorporates some personal (autobiographical) anecdotes, giving us a good sense of who she is and why she cares so deeply about this topic. Readers will find in this book invaluable information and analysis. The author is to be commended for her important contribution to this field.

I can only say great things about this book. Rueda Esquivel's thorough research and critical analysis of Chicana Lesbian literature from the 1970's to the year 2000 is breathtaking. Chapter after chapter, you will not only be fascinated, but you will be left with a wave of optimism for the future of Chicana and Chicano scholarship. If you are taking a course in Chicana feminisms, Chicana Lesbian literature, or want to read an analysis that posits gender and sexuality in relation to race and class, then you must pick up a copy of this book. This book requires you to either have some background in Chicana lesbian literature or can introduce you to the fabulous works being produced by Chicana lesbians.
I hope that this is only the first step in critically engaging with Chicana lesbian literature. An interesting contradiction in Mendoza's thought—his humanist theories versus personal ambition—prevented him from successful implemention of tyrannical imperial policies. His role in the government of the Holy Roman Empire shows how the exertion of imperialist power, humanist ethics notwithstanding, inevitably entails corruption, hypocrisy, greed, and imbalance in the one who tries to wield this power.

Gifted to the point of universal genius, Mendoza was perhaps the foremost representative of the splendid but little-known epoch of Spanish humanism, the era between the death of Queen Isabel (1504) and the abdication of her grandson Charles V (1556). Spain's short-lived Renaissance came to an abrupt end with the accession of Philip II and the almost simultaneous onset of the Counter Reformation. To this changed Spain, under monolithic thought control now exacted and enforced by monarch and Inquisition, Mendoza returned to live the last third of his life, mostly in obscurity, and in the last few years in royal disgrace.

Based on primary sources, this first biography of Mendoza in English also examines the relevance of some of Don Diego's disputed literary works to the legend that grew up around him as a spokesman for latent unorthodox opinion.

This is Dobie's finest book, with the possible exception of APACHE GOLD AND YAQUI SILVER, and one of his least known; it is also one of the finest books about Mexico ever written...each time I read it I can smell anew the woodsmoke from the campfires of the old vaqueros,and sense a magical spirit of that land which has forever vanished...the ancient animistic, pre-Christian spirit of Mexico in which every plant, rock, and animal is ferociously alive and not necessarily there for a paltry human's benefit! Dobie caught it in this book and you can feel it and live it for a while. Jeremy T. Miner is director of sponsored programs at St. Norbert College. In addition to developing and administering proposals for the college, he has served as a reviewer for federal grant programs and has helped private foundations streamline their grant application guidelines. Miner is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators. Along with Lynn Miner, he co-authored Proposal Planning and Writing, 3rd edition (Greenwood Press). As a partner in Miner and Associates, Inc., a grant consulting firm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he provides proposal writing, computerized grantseeking, and workshop services for academic and nonprofit organizations nationwide.

Lynn E. Miner is a principal in Miner and Associates, Inc., a leading nationwide grants consulting group that specializes in training successful grantseekers. He has been an active grantseeker in academic, health care, and other nonprofit environments and for the past three decades. He has been affiliated with public and private universities and hospitals as a professor and research administrator. Teiser--D. T. Sukuki professor in Buddhist Studies at Princeton--puts the classical source of the wheel as the preferred and eventually conventional symbol for the Buddhist spiritual concept of a series of lifetimes for nearly every person with the Mulasarvastivada school of Indian Buddhism. Although this school is only one of many schools of Buddhism which have grown up throughout Asia over centuries, the location of the Mulasarvastivada school in north-central India where Buddhism originated and the time of its formation in the early though not the initial development of Indian Buddhism gave its teachings and practices an exceptional canonical authority. "[A]s the canonical story of the wheel of rebirth shows, the vinaya [the 'voluminous canon of monastic discipline'] provided the narrative authority for a collective enterprise that drew lay people to Buddhist temples and sent monks and nuns out into the lay community."

The circular shape of the wheel is the basic configuration uniting this central symbol of Buddhism as it spread throughout Asia in the following centuries. Like the cross of Christianity, the wheel of Buddhism has become identified with this world religion. But different features of the wheel symbolizing different concepts and tenets of Buddhism have been emphasized in different regions and different times. The wheel's hub, spokes, and rim are three "compositional elements" highlighted by Teiser; with the hub, for instance, signifying both a focus and "what drives the wheel, what makes it go around." The fourth "property of the wheel is that it marks off an inside from an outside." This most complex compositional element of a wheel represents the closed system involving endless cycles of death and rebirth, but also indicates transcendence beyond this since the Buddhist wheel is always in the context of a square frame putting the wheel into perspective and suggesting that there is a realm of spirituality outside of it. "The point of the wheel, so to speak, is to move outside of it."

Weaving narratives with gendered analysis and historiography of Mexicans in the Midwest, Mexican Women and the Other Side of Immigration examines the unique transnational community created between San Ignacio Cerro Gordo, Jalisco, and Detroit, Michigan, in the last three decades of the twentieth century, asserting that both the community of origin and the receiving community are integral to an immigrant's everyday life, though the manifestations of this are rife with contradictions.

Exploring the challenges faced by this population since the inception of the Bracero Program in 1942 in constantly re-creating, adapting, accommodating, shaping, and creating new meanings of their environments, Luz María Gordillo emphasizes the gender-specific aspects of these situations. While other studies of Mexican transnational identity focus on social institutions, Gordillo's work introduces the concept of transnational sexualities, particularly the social construction of working-class sexuality. Her findings indicate that many female San Ignacians shattered stereotypes, transgressing traditionally male roles while their husbands lived abroad. When the women themselves immigrated as well, these transgressions facilitated their adaptation in Detroit. Placed within the larger context of globalization, Mexican Women and the Other Side of Immigration is a timely excavation of oral histories, archival documents, and the remnants of three decades of memory.
