great, very broad introduction

This book takes a systematic approach to Islam in Europe, dividing the chapters by nation. The first section goes nation by nation, the authors gives a brief overview of the history of Muslims and Islam in that particular nation. The authors give demographical data - the number of Muslims (and the major subgroups within) for each nation. This is a great introduction to the subject of Muslims in Europe, giving incontestable hard data (census information, political responses, etc.) but does not delve into very great detail in any location. The second (and much more brief) section deals with 'cross-national issues' like Muslim youth etc. For those interested in the subject, a great place to start. A great overview. Want a little information (30-40 pages) about Muslims in Portugal, Spain, or Scandinavia? Look here. For those who want a comprehensive history, this is probably not your book.

Hunte is a collection of unconvincing positions concerning unclear issues relating to a very important subject at this time. The work fails to systematically tackle the hard issues of social integration between Islamic society and western concepts of individual rights and democracy. There are many better works, chief among which is Dr. Sami Aldeeb Abu-Sahlieh's work MUSLIMS IN THE WEST (0-9719496-0-3 published by Shangri-La Publications), which is a monumental exploration of the social, legal, religious and political issues.

In the first comprehensive history of the region, Jefferson Morgenthaler traces the history of La Junta de los Rios from the formation of the Mexico-Texas border in the mid-19th century to the 1997 ambush shooting of teenage goatherd Esquiel Hernandez by U.S. Marines performing drug interdiction in El Polvo, Texas. "Though it is scores of miles from a major highway, I found natives, soldiers, rebels, bandidos, heroes, scoundrels, drug lords, scalp hunters, medal winners, and mystics," writes Morgenthaler. "I found love, tragedy, struggle, and stories that have never been told." Great read

Well written early Texas history. Morgenthaler carefully guides you through the challenges of living in the Wild West, newly created Texas and its close connection to Mexico. These real-life characters are better than any fictional characters I've read. I never thought I'd call a history book a page turner, but this is one.

Excellent coverage of the Texas/Mexico border at "La Junta," an area that is today Presidio, Texas, and Ojinaga, Mexico. Strength of the book is the historical La Junta. Modern corruption and drug dealing com e in at the end, but deserved more ... or less of the narrative. Excellent scholarship and a writing style that captivates the reader.

Guide to Great Britain's Ghosts!

Peter Underwood's WHERE THE GHOSTS WALK is a rather unique travel guide to Great Britain, which the book claims is "The Most Haunted Country in the World." Whether you believe in the paranormal, Underwood's book, a 2013 Souvenir Press release, is an appealing guide to some interesting 'Old Country' locales and offbeat history.

Underwood, "The World's Leading Ghost Hunter" according to the book, dishes up 422 pages of ghostly happenings divided into chapters on Haunted Airfields, Haunted Ancient Sites, Haunted Battlefields, Haunted Bridges, Haunted Gardens, Haunted Railways, Haunted Waters, etc. So the reader is treated to tales of Phantom Spitfires, Ghostly monks and medieval festivals, Shimmering ladies in white, Phantom armies, ethereal approximations of King Arthur and Dylan Thomas, Viking warriors, Ghost music, Phantom trains, Spirit-possessed trees and so on. The tales range in setting from the north of Scotland to Beachy Head in the south, earning Underwood's book its self-proclaimed status as THE GAZETTEER OF HAUNTED BRITAIN.

I very much enjoy travel any and all guides to Great Britain so I liked Underwood's smorgasbord of sites. As far as the ghost angle goes, I'm afraid I subscribe to the Great Detective's statement that "This Agency stands flat-footed upon the ground and there it must remain. The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply." In any case, WHERE THE GHOSTS WALK is an informative, fun guide to Great Brtain. Recommended.

MICHAEL P. BERMAN received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008 for his work on the Southwestern grasslands that appears in Trinity. A Humbling Walk into the Heart of Darkness

This apparent "coffee table" photography book is far more than one can appreciate from a quick browse online or in the book store. Yes, the stark B/W images of an equally stark landscape are well done and true to the geographic place that is the book's subject matter. The core of the book, however, is not the photography. Rather, it is Bowden's long, angry, yet both lyrical and calm essay moving circularly through events on the "ground" of this place over five centuries. The essay is about many things -- nature; environment; tribalism, nationalism, and the human motivation of power; man's constant and abiding blindness to the consequences of his actions, as well as his equally constant and unthinking inhumanity to his fellow man illustrated starkly by thousands of "events" or "stories" occurring within the geography area that is the subject matter of the book; the conception and birth of the atomic bomb at "Trinity" and the cultivation of the consequent military-industrial economy; and, the world of fear and illusion in which we all live out our days. In some sense, the subjects are threads, seemingly disparate, but seamlessly utilized to create the whole cloth that is the essay's overarching theme.

In a sense, it is numbing to read this essay. At the same time, however, in both its scope and detail, the impact is profound and profoundly thought provoking. It is a lament on the brutal truth of so much of life, but at the same time uplifting and somehow hopeful. In this sense, it is paradoxical -- both numbing, yet inspiring. I read it as a call to wake from illusion, from much of the "lie" about human existence and the "human condition" and a call to live more consciously in the world, to see our true place within the scope and flow of nature (or "creation," if you prefer that characterization). What Mr. Bowden is saying is indeed dark, in many respects unrelentingly dark. Yet, his skill and lyricism as a writer, the constancy of his themes, and his call for clear discernment of man's place in our environment and our own history is ultimately inspiring.

In my view, this work is Nietzschean in its power. Like Nietzsche, Bowden has "philosophized with a hammer." Yet, that hammer has been wielded with such consummate writing skill and obvious love for the subject matter that it is a "hammer blow" well worth a careful and thoughtful read.

The best thing to have ever happened to a stack of paper

I keep this book next to my couch and I read it completely out of order, just a little every day, which I think is the best way to read it. It is the most moving and beautifully written account of humanity that I have ever encountered. It winds through stories and narratives and does so with a deep casualness that makes the stories even more moving. It reads the way that I imagine God sees the world, through a great distance and yet without any loss of clarity. The stories move back and forth between centuries and characters, often nameless, experiencing powerful tragedies and small blessings and ultimately leaving the reader with a sense of beauty and hope.

terrific!

"Trinity" is perhaps the best book I have read in the past few years. Part history, sociology, geography, philosophy and politics, this is a deep and powerful book. The photos are nice and engaging, but it is Bowden's prose that is so moving. I have read nearly everything of Bowden's and this is right near the top of my list of favorite books of his. It is not an "easy" read as every page is filled with engrossing information and ideas to chew on and sort out. I can't recommend this book enough. I am already looking forward to reading it again.

So-so, a lot of common sense, no sources

As a scholarly work this would fail due to a lack of sources for the many facts cited within. Although I think its target audience is the general public, sources for further reading would be helpful.
Pooler presents an overview of consumer psychology, which mainly equates to common sense. The book is worthwhile reading but should be read in addition to some more scholarly works on consumer psychology or at least some fact books.

Some of the best writing ever

Emily was an exceptional talent. I savor each story- and try not to go too fast hoping the book will not end. She is remarkable. I love her paintings, but the painting that she does in my mind may be even better! She brings even the most mundane event to life in living color. One of my favorite books is "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith I Capture the Castle....I have been looking for another writer who can so vividly 'take me there' and Emily Carr is it. In her biography, it says she read very few books but her favorite was "Song of Myself" by Walt Whitman- It shows.The Complete Poems (Penguin Classics)]

A fascinating life, colorfully and skillfully recorded

Everyone in Victoria BC knows that Emily Carr, our native daughter, the Canadian impressionist and adopted member of the Group of Seven artists in Canada was a superb painter. Her scenes of Northwest trees, totems, and peoples are iconic and really quite unique in the world of art. See, e.g. [...]

But who knew she was such a gifted writer? Emily's very first book, Klee Wyck, won a Governor General's award, which is a rare Canadian honor and most especially so for a first time author. But Emily never did anything half way. When her health began to fail and she could no longer take her trailer (named Elephant) out into the woods along with her dogs, rat, and monkey Woo, she took a creative writing course and began to chronicle her numerous adventures in the wilds of BC, her experiences as a landlady (a hated role, which was however a necessity given that her art was not appreciated or remunerative during her lifetime), a kennel owner, her colorful childhood as a troublemaker in a large and very traditional family in early Victoria, her eclectic and delightful collection of pets, and her unique experiences among the native peoples of the region. They called her "Klee Wyck", the "Laughing One" because of her easy familiarity with them during a time when contact with white inhabitants was unusual. This book is not actually a Complete collection of her works, but it combines some of the best and is the most efficient way to get a taste of her range of writing in one volume. I did not want to put it down.

This book must be out of print; I tried to get another copy last year for a gift and could not find one. And btw, Amazon, the book was NOT written by Doris Shadbolt. She merely provided an introduction. Except for the introduction, the writing is pure Emily. Lovely!

Lovely stories of growing up in British Columbia, of the native Americans and her efforts to capture their art of totem poles. Humorously told stories by a great Canadian artist of the boarding house she opened and ran to make a living. Simple language with lovely metaphors.
