The relationship between Esti, daughter of a wealthy Vienna attorney and her husband Martin Freud is foreshadowed by the young lovers' fathers. And Esti's father, on hearing of her love for Martin, expressed regret she was involved with a man who was not a financially favorable linkage, and that his family was not respectable since patriarch Sigmund was just another psychiatrist, and one who writes pornography books at that. Thus begins the ill-fated relationship that would rock two families and a generation of children to come. Sophie weaves into the text letters she inherited, including letters from Martin while he was a prisoner of war, and excerpts from her own diary, kept as an adolescent. The resulting mosaic will fascinate―and perhaps disturb―readers interested in Freud and psychoanalysis, as well as those intrigued by relationships and family.

Excellent book

This book is a fascinating read, both in terms of family dynamics and world history. Through letters, diaries and commentary from various family members, Sophie Freud (Sigmund Freud's granddaughter) gives life to her mother Esti, including her troubled marriage to Freud's son Martin, her struggle to be accepted by the Freud family, and her difficult relationships with her children. The book also has moments of historic drama, such as when Sophie and her mother flee Paris by bicycle two days before the Nazis invade. There are also bits of humor, such as when the teenage Sophie's diary reveals that she is much more concerned about boys, her figure, and finishing her qualifying exams than she is about the approaching Nazis. Overall, the book provides unique insight into a complicated (and famous) family at an especially charged time in history. I really enjoyed it.Living in the Shadow of the Freud Family

Living History

Sophie Freud, the author of this wonderful book, has kept a diary most of her life, as did her mother, Esti, along with many letters and documents of her fractured family. These documents are the scaffolding of a compelling story of romance, marriage, betrayal, escape and ultimately, the need to reinvent one's self in another country. Ms.Freud uses these papers (in French and German), along with her own commentary and that of her brother. The tale of her escape from Paris on a bicycle with her mother is vivid. She also uses photographs of her family and documents which increase the appeal of the book.

For anyone interested in a life of the twentieth century, with war, loss and emigration, this is a wonderful book.

I bought this for a class, but enjoyed it so much that I decided to keep it rather than just disposing of most of my text books like I usually do. Great information on Alaska that is more widespread than just the Klondike.

This is a well-written, comprehensive tour de force, from a team of researchers/writers/historians who clearly know their history. They are also experts in the compelling and often complicated history of the politics in the state of Texas. Phillips, a history professor, is also author of the award-winning book White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion in Dallas, 1841-2001 and is considered the nation's leading historian writing on Texas politics.

David Miller, an American, lived in Bolivia for 21 years, working as a missionary with the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana). Almost unbelievable......

I'm not sure what to make of this book. It tells the story of Bellavista prison in Colombia which was apparently transformed by God through an ex-prisoner within the space of a few months (years?) The story is quite disjointed as it includes testimonies from various people, these have been inserted into the narrative and sometimes I found it difficult to navigate these and to remember where I was in the actual story.

The author relates that at the start of the ministry there were several murders each day inside the prison walls and that the inmates had been playing football with a severed head....there were a lot of details of this nature that I felt were too graphic in places although I don't think the author was attempting to glorify sin. I think his goal was to depict how dramatic the transformation was in light of the original situation.

Despite this I found the details hard to believe. Details of mass sweeping conversions from the outset of the evangelist's ministry seem unlikely (although of course possible) in an environment of fear and daily homicides. Surely it would have taken time to build trust and relationships sufficient to even share the Gospel and to conduct effective follow up. The converts themselves were leading ministries shortly after their conversions. I guess the author believes there was a revival but I wonder if it was more a case of Easy Believism/Decisionism....the author frequently refers to a form of the "Sinners prayer" which seemed to be prayed with numerous people throughout the book.
It seems that everyone that was approached "accepted Christ" but there is little detail about what happened afterwards and this book is now pretty outdated. I hope these conversions were genuine and that lives were really changed.

I carried out some research and was unable to find supporting evidence for the stories told in the book but I believe this is due to the age rather than anything else. I did find a secular account of Bellavista prison which tells quite a different story of the reason for the sudden changes in the prison that doesn't have a lot to do with God. But obviously non-believers will always be keen to play down any true work of God so this doesn't necessarily help. I was pleased to read that one of the main evangelists involved in the story is still working in the prison but she now serves with OMS. Sadly the original evangelist it seems fell into sin and was removed from his position both as Pastor and with Prison Fellowship.

I wouldn't recommend this due to the graphic violence, the difficulty in following the story and the fact that it is now pretty outdated. Also, because it seems to be impossible to corroborate the events that are detailed in the book. The book is clean in terms of language.

Some readers of this review may question my critique. I prefer to look at it as an attempt to discern whether dramatic testimonies like this are really works of God or whether they are of the flesh due to surface emotions or something more sinister. As Christians we are told to "test the Spirits" and to "search the Scriptures." I believe we should do more of this and not just blindly accept everything 'good' that seems to happen in the name of Jesus especially when it doesn't accord with Scripture. We need to remember that the Enemy can counterfeit signs and wonders and that he also appears as an 'angel of light,' if only to confuse people. Some of these types of stories have later been found to be false; 'Taming the Tiger' by Tony Anthony is an example and this seriously damages the Christian witness in the eyes of non-believers. Therefore we must examine these stories for authenticity as well as trusting that God is more than able to bring about these supernatural events as He wills.

David Miller chronicles a tide-change in the prisons of Colombia (Columbia, South America). Any reader with a desire to see felons come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ will want to study "The Lord of BellaVista".
The BellaVista Jail in Medellin was exploding with violence. In the recent past, as many as 20 inmates and corrections officers died each month in BellaVista. "At times, the monthly bodycount climed as high as 50." BellaVista has been described as the deadliest prison in the deadliest country in the Western world.
Focusing on the ministry of former convicts, Miller reveals the possibilities when lives are yielded to Christ. Sicarios ( contract killers, specializing in murder, kidnappings and extotion for the drug cartels ) escape the Colombian Death Culture, while still incarcerated in the BellaVista National Jail, the Buen Pastor Women's Prison, the Picalena Penitentiary or one of several other Colombian prisons. Veteran Colombian missionary for OMS International, Jeannine Brabon, along with transformed criminals, now broadcasts a daily radio program from the BellaVista Jail chapel.
"The Lord of BellaVista" tells of the profound effect of the love of Jesus Christ. The obvious impact of that love should bring joy to the hearts of jail ministers and criminal justice professionals. The unyielding love of Christ has already brought that joy to many of the Colombian prisoners.
"The press was coming daily to BellaVista to investigate how many dead and wounded there were. The officers began to say, 'There are none, not even one.' Pretty soon the reporters thought [the officers] were covering up the truth. So, they insisted on entering the cell blocks themselves . . . The reporters were quite impressed because BellaVista had not suffered a single casualty in some time."
"When they asked [the prisoners] why [the murders had ended], [the prisoners] said, 'Look, BellaVista has a new cacique, the Lord Jesus Christ. He has taken over this jail. That's what you're seeing here."

This is a muser's dictionary. You know, the kind of guy or gal who has no intention of finding anything specifically, but will hunker down and read what others consider reference.

Reference, schmeference! Dictionaries are not mean for bookshelves, but to be devoured and enjoyed! And with the "Readers Digest Illustrated Reverse Dictionary" you get a great book to do that with.

On one hand, it acts like the standard dictionaries. Look up a word, get a definition. It goes beyond this, though. Rather than getting bogged down by linguistics and pronunciation indexes, you'll be greeted by a bevy of charts and lists organizing words. It isn't quite a thesaurus, but it isn't a dictionary either. It is somewhere in-between, and something new in the midst of it all.

For those among us smitten by words and all the curiosity that goes with them, this is a book to feast on.

Be assured that the "Illustrated Reverse Dictionary" won't be the only dictionary you'll need. Far from it, but it is a lot of fun.

There are other great dictionaries to be reckoned with, from "The New Oxford American Dictionary," which defines words with clarity, to the big kahuna of them all, to the highly unusual "The Highly Selective Dictionary for the Extraordinarily Literate."

The Shunzhi era (1644-61), marking the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing, was a transitional period in Chinese history. By the late 1630s, painters on porcelain had developed a new, highly recognizable, and successful style. Many of the innovative themes were taken from woodblock prints, with landscapes and narrative scenes particularly inspired by contemporary scroll and album paintings. Soon after 1644, potters began to paint wonderful landscapes, with stylistic devices such as clouds and rock formations used to fill in the "back" of the pot. The beauty and liveliness of the pots' paintings, along with the evolving shapes of the pots, stands out and makes these years a most significant period the art history of China. In the Shunzhi era, more than any other time in the last 500 years of Chinese porcelain, there was a strong emphasis on individual works of art, each one unique.

Early Andean historiography reveals a subaltern history of indigenous gender and sexuality that saw masculinity and femininity not as essential absolutes. Third-gender ritualists, Ipas, mediated between the masculine and feminine spheres of culture in important ceremonies and were recorded in fragments of myths and transcribed oral accounts. Ritual performance by cross-dressed men symbolically created a third space of mediation that invoked the mythic androgyne of the pre-Hispanic Andes. The missionaries and civil authorities colonizing the Andes deemed these performances transgressive and sodomitical.

In this book, Michael J. Horswell examines alternative gender and sexuality in the colonial Andean world, and uses the concept of the third gender to reconsider some fundamental paradigms of Andean culture. By deconstructing what literary tropes of sexuality reveal about Andean pre-Hispanic and colonial indigenous culture, he provides an alternative history and interpretation of the much-maligned aboriginal subjects the Spanish often referred to as "sodomites." Horswell traces the origin of the dominant tropes of masculinist sexuality from canonical medieval texts to early modern Spanish secular and moralist literature produced in the context of material persecution of effeminates and sodomites in Spain. These values traveled to the Andes and were used as powerful rhetorical weapons in the struggle to justify the conquest of the Incas.

In the first decades of the twentieth century, fish in the Great Lakes and Puget Sound, seals in the North Pacific, and birds across North America faced a common threat: over harvesting that threatened extinction for many species. Progressive era conservationists saw a need for government intervention to protect threatened animals. And because so many species migrated across international political boundaries, their protectors saw the necessity of international conservation agreements. In The Dawn of Conservation Diplomacy, Kurkpatrick Dorsey examines the first three comprehensive wildlife conservation treaties in history, all between the United States and Canada: the Inland Fisheries Treaty of 1908, the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention of 1911, and the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1916.

In his highly readable text, Dorsey argues that successful conservation treaties came only after conservationists learned to marshal scientific evidence, public sentiment, and economic incentives in their campaigns for protective legislation. The first treaty, intended to rescue the overfished boundary waters, failed to gain the necessary support and never became law. Despite scientific evidence of the need for conservation, politicians, and the general public were unable to counter the vocal opposition of fishermen across the continent. A few years later, conservationists successfully rallied popular sympathy for fur seals threatened with slaughter and the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention was adopted. By the time of the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1916, the importance of aesthetic appeal was clear: North American citizens were joining chapters of the Audubon Society in efforts to protect beautiful songbirds. Conservationists also presented economic evidence to support their efforts as they argued that threatened bird species provided invaluable service to farmers.

Dorsey recounts the story of each of these early treaties, examining the scientific research that provided the basis for each effort, acknowledging the complexity of the issues, and presenting the personalities behind the politics. He argues that these decades-old treaties both directly affect us today and offer lessons for future conservation efforts.

Useful history of three early conservation treaties

This book examines the first three "comprehensive wildlife treaties in history," all between the United States and Canada: the 1908 Inland Fisheries Treaty, the 1911 North Pacific Fur Seal Convention, and the 1916 Migratory Bird Treaty.

Dorsey emphasizes three factors in telling this story, science, sentiment, and economics. These provide hooks on which to build the narrative, not a source of hypotheses to test. (Using three variables to explain three cases would be poor case study design in any case.) He doesn't really connect these events to larger themes in either conservation diplomacy or progressive politics, so this book is for people who want to know about these three treaties as opposed to a wider readership.

The book provides an invaluable source for information on the negotiating history of these three cases. Dorsey gives much less attention to how well (or poorly) they actually worked. This would probably be a different book but the question of effectiveness should be central to how we view these treaties.

For the Birds (and Fish too)

This is one of those books readers might dismiss as too specialized. That would be a mistake. Kurk Dorsey is one of the first American diplomatic historians to treat relations with Canada. Beyond that he sees how transborder issues raised by wildlife treaties run into conflicting national agendas. The Canadian-American wildlife treaties anticipate more recent efforts to negotiate environmental issues. The writing in this book makes it an engaging read.

Wonderful exposition of envirormental diplomacy.

Dorsey examines multiple transnational treaties in both an environmental and diplomatic milieu, primarily during the progressive era. My only wish is a second tome on Agent Orange as it relates to the Geneva Accords of 1925, and the acceptance of these accords in the 1970's.
