The Ideal of the Practical is a study of efforts by a segment of the upper class in an aristocratic Latin American society to alter cultural values in the society, creating stronger orientations toward the technical and the practical. Frank Safford describes attempts by members of Colombia’s nineteenth-century political elite to use technical education as a means of nurturing energetic upper-class entrepreneurs and an industrious working class in a static agrarian economy. In the course of his analysis, Safford sketches the historical development of scientific and technical education and of the engineering profession in Colombia.

The book opens with a description of the economic and social context of early nineteenth-century Colombia. It then discusses some early experiments with manual industrial training between 1820 and 1850. Later chapters deal with the careers of upper-class youths sent abroad for scientific and technical training, the growth of indigenous engineering education, and the crystallization of a Colombian engineering profession. While the book primarily explores the nineteenth century, it also touches on eighteenth-century Spanish Bourbon antecedents and provides an epilogue on the twentieth-century evolution of technical elites in Colombia.

The author focuses on the reasons why the implantation of technical education and technical orientations proved difficult. He examines the interplay between various obstructions: on the one hand, a hierarchical social structure and aristocratic social values and, on the other, obstructions created by fundamental geographic and economic conditions. He concludes that, while Colombian leaders had hoped that technical education and the development of values oriented toward the technical would spearhead economic growth, in fact economic growth proved a prerequisite for the effective implantation of technical orientations and training.

Three Gandhari Ekottarikagama-Type Sutras continues the Gandharan Buddhist Texts studies of the first-century A.D. birch bark scrolls in the British Library's Kharosthi manuscript collection. It describes the text found on two fragments which constitute the lower part of a scroll and consists of the remnants of three sutras. All three sutras are relatively short and have an association with the number four, which suggests that they are from a Gandhar- Ekottarikagama, a collection of short discourses grouped according to numerical principles and one of the major collections of writings in the Buddhist canon.

The first sutra records a discussion in which a brahman asks the Buddha four questions. The second su-tra, like the third, depicts the Buddha preaching to monks. The structure of this sutra is based on the four postures: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. The Buddha’s discourse in the third sutra concerns the four efforts (or abandonings).

The book describes the condition of the scroll and its reconstruction; examines in detail the literary and textual background of the sutras, comparing them with other extant versions and parallels in other languages; and presents a transcription of the extant text, a reconstruction, and an English translation. It includes chapters on the paleography, orthography, phonology, and morphology of the text, and offers a detailed analytic commentary.

He is currently a research associate at the University of Arizona’s Southwest Center. MARK HAYNES joined the Border Patrol in 1978 and retired after twenty-five years of service in the Yuma area. He spent three years as Agent in Charge of the Tacna/Wellton Station and also served as Assistant Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector. Currently, he is an active member of the Arizona Historical Society.

Respectful Rendition of a Difficult Job

This heavily researched view into the daily lives of Border Patrol workers over the years was very enlightening. Until recent issues on the border, I had no idea how long this branch of government workers has been on the job. It seems the authors really did their homework in getting to the heart of the day-to-day toil of this profession. I'd be interested in a follow up with the new brand of Border Patrol out there in huge numbers.

American Heroes, Unsung and Glad of It

Anything with Bill Broyles' name on it will always be worth reading and that's why I picked up "Border Duty" without hesitation. When glancing at the New Books shelf in our local library the title caught my eye first, then Broyles name, so it went home with me last week in a case of mistaken identity. I've read several Iraq war books over the past few years and thot this must be the latest and, coming from Bill B, it must be a worthy read. Later in the day when actually looking at the book more carefully I was surprised to see it's really about the U.S. Border Patrol. As mild disappointment crept in, I began to read these transcribed oral histories of former Border Patrol agents and agent/pilots and can state unequivocally that this book should be read by anyone who feels strongly about the protection of our borders, especially the southern one. These are hard working, dedicated Americans whose jobs most of us would not want to do but they do thoughtfully and with a lot of compassion. While catching people trying to enter the U. S. illegally is their main task, without exception they also save lives on a regular basis. This is especially true in the desert southwest where conditions are harsh, unforgiving, and lethal simply because many "illegals" underestimate the danger in walking across many miles of vast desert land. This book offers more insight per page into the human condition than any I've read in a while. All the book's life histories are told by career agents who spent 20, 30, and more years doing an essential job that is woefully misunderstood and under appreciated. Whether they were ground pounding relentlessly, driving rugged, hot terrain or flying low and slow in the tracks of the illegals, smugglers or drug runners, the agents were and are playing an often life or death game that happens 24/7/365. Reading their thoughts on how they do their jobs plus why they do it is as fascinating as anything first person that you'll read outside of wartime combat or other police type careers. This book is rewarding too in that once interviewed the agents were allowed to offer input, additions, and corrections where needed to guarantee accuracy and honesty. For this alone Desert Duty is a must read in today's America where money and power seem to be the primary attractions to career choice regardless of ethics, patriotism, or simple human kindness.

In this paradigm-shifting book, Patrick L. Hamilton analyzes works by Rudolfo Anaya, Ana Castillo, Denise Chávez, Rolando Hinojosa, Arturo Islas, John Rechy, Alfredo Véa, and Helena María Viramontes to expand our understandings of the cultural interactions within the United States that are communicated by Chicano/a fiction. He argues that the narrative ethics of "resistance" within the Chicano/a canon is actually complemented by ethics of "persistence" and "transformation" that imagine cultural differences within the United States as participatory and irreducible to simple oppositions. To demonstrate these alternative ethics, Hamilton adapts the methodology of cognitive mapping; that is, he treats the chosen fictional texts as mental maps that are constructed around and communicative of the narrative's ethics. As he reads these cognitive maps, which envision Chicano/a culture as being part of U.S. society rather than as "resistant" and separate, Hamilton asserts that the authors' conception of cultural difference speaks more usefully to current sociopolitical debates, such as those about gay marriage and immigration reform, than does the traditional "resistant" paradigm.

You should be ashamed of yourself for not buying this book--you can get it for a penny

I have TOO MANY needlework books. So why do I keep adding to my collection? When I see a book on samplers, I just can't resist: I'm an addict. The author spells it "colour" and lives in Gloucestershire, England, so in her history of samplers, she is mostly restricting it to England's (although her first of 21 museum recommendations is The American Museum in Britain which is in Bath). This book fails to discuss the Jane Bostocke sampler of 1598 which is the oldest stitch-signed and -dated sampler in the English language. The Victoria & Albert Museum houses it--I held in my trembling hands several years ago during a visit to London--and is the source of some information on samplers so I think 1981 just missed this recent earth-shaking discovery. It's from the 16th century. Anyway, the choice of samplers to display in the book is excellent; of course, we'd love them all to be in color but such was not the norm in the early '80's so we're satisfied with how much there is. What I really like in this book beyond the history is the specialized sections to expand your understanding of what samplers meant to the girls and women who stitched them.

For example, "The Symbolism of the Motifs" chapter is quaint and sweet. The woman holding a palm branch is meant to depict women as the symbol of life. With stars--8-pointed represents Bethlehem, 6-pointed is a Jewish symbol and 5-pointed announces the birth of Jesus. Then Ms. Lewis has designed 16 samplers for us to cross stitch or needlepoint using random motifs and designs, meaning no museum replicas. The patterns range from very easy to medium difficulty. There are 12 pages of spot motifs and borders, you can lift one of the alphabets on her samplers, and you're encouraged to design your own sampler. One thing I love is the two-page listing of inscriptions and verses from 18th and 19th century samplers. Often with a rigid religious bent, a typical verse reads:

"Our life is never at a stand
'Tis like a fading flower
Death which is always near at hand
Comes nearer every hour."

This book slides nicely into my section on samplers and I recommend it to you.

Excellent expression of grief.

My late wife left behind dozens of books on or about cats, this was one of them. While it is aimed at helping those who grieve the loss of a beloved animal companion, reading it was almost like hearing her voice whispering in my ear about how to best deal with her death. A loving gift for those that are suffering the loss of a pet. Recommended.

Directly to the Heart

It is a beautiful, beautiful poem that she's written and published in this book. It's heartbreaking and consoling at the same time. Having just lost one of my Babies, one of my little children, it was very moving. I highly, highly recommend it for anyone who has been so unfortunate as to have lost one of their "little children" too.

This is a hard book to rate

The book is very, very short, and has very few words in it. However, to those who have lost a cherished pet, it has the power to move one to tears. I lost my wonderful, special needs cat in 2005, yet I still think about her and mourn her loss. We struggled together to treat her renal failure, but she had a loving, safe home after I found her on the edge of a busy street, obviously very sick.

It is a moving little book, and best given to one who has lost a pet. It brings back all of the memories, for good or for ill.

My wife liked it so much she has purchased another copy to give to a friend from church who is probably going to lose her 20-year-old cat within the next few months.

The first text, referred to as the Gandhari London Dharmapada, represents an anthology of verses well known in the Buddhist tradition. The second text is a series of stories concerning previous births of the Buddha and of some of his disciples.

Mountain Magic In Texas

I am a collector of photographic mountain / wilderness books from around the world and I can safely say that this one takes a special place on the shelf. No huge glacier covered peaks here but a superb collection of photos featuring a rocky and rugged landscape like no other. Well written, interesting text combined with 127 crystal clear, colourful and beautifully printed photos make this book a pleasure to read and admire over and over. I never knew Texas was so wild and beautiful - highly recommended.

Review: June Jordan's Poetry as Political, Educational

June Jordan was a strong woman and political leader, acting in many ways, including as a poet, writer, activist, and educator. The beliefs she held strongly guided her actions in her life, especially concerning education and civil rights. Her poetry was a way of expressing her beliefs, but also her politics, leadership, personality, and activism. Jordan used simple words to convey bold meaning, each poem a "political act," like Valerie Kinloch wrote in Jordan's biography. Reading her poetry in class, I could feel the weight of the importance of the political message Jordan communicates through her poetry. Each word was read with passion, and each was necessary. The repetition of the phrases and words in Jordan's poetry illustrates Jordan's commitment to her work and her political message. It is phrases like, "too bad there is no oil between her legs" that will stay with me, as her political message and poetry will stay with me.

Jordan's educational reform efforts were also political acts, as her poetry was. I think it is interesting that she used poetry as the center of her educational reform. Like her political message in her poetry, poetry in general was so important for her. She wanted to bring poetry to underprivileged students in public schools. By forming poetry groups and encouraging students to express themselves this way, Jordan is helping them communicate their own experiences and beliefs, creating their own "political acts." I think it is inspiring the way she uses an art form to create change in a community.

Valerie Kinloch's portrayal of June Jordan is personal, although she had never met her. I actually got to speak with Kinloch on a conference call in my class, and she described the way she researched and what she thought of Jordan as an activist and reformer. Both Jordan and Kinloch are fascinating people, so I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be touched by the story of a life that ended too soon, but impacted the world.
