CHARLES LONDON is a military writer of long-standing, with a particular interest in the Royal Navy in the Great War. He has published a number of books and articles on nineteenth and twentieth century military history. He has made a particular study of the Battle of Jutland.

One of the Best of the Osprey Campaign Series

Author Charles London has set himself a difficult task: to write a 96-page campaign summary of the controversial Battle of Jutland in 1916. This was the only major clash of dreadnought battleships before aircraft changed naval warfare, but its uniqueness and inconclusive results provide ample fodder for competing interpretations.
On the whole, this volume repesents one of the very best of the Osprey Campaign series. The maps are excellent, and provide much better depictions of the action than the sketch maps usually provided in much lengthier works. The strategic level map on page 32 which depicts the opening moves is one of the best I have seen, including locations of all U-Boats and British submarines (unfortunately he did leave out Zeppelin patrol areas). Both the photographs and artwork are of excellent quality. This volume is a valuable visual companion to John Campbell's technical Jutland: An Analysis of the Fighting, which lacks photos and decent maps.
On the negative side, the author is rather blatantly biased toward the British. There is little or no mention of significant damage to British dreadnoughts, including the seven hits on HMS Malaya, the six hits on HMS Barham and the torpedo hit on HMS Marlborough (all three of which had close calls with sinking). On the other hand, damage to German ships is sometimes exaggerated; such as when the author claims that three German pre-dreadnoughts were hit when in fact, two were hit by one shell each (minor damage) and the third suffered one sailor killed from a shell splinter. The author alludes to the German advantage in night fighting but fails to mention that they had starshells, while the British did not.
The author makes selective use of the vast technical data available on Jutland. He notes that both sides gunnery was about the same - 3% probability of hits and that the various advantages and defects of their ship designs canceled each other out. In fact, the British obtained 2.75% hits of rounds fired versus 3.39% for the Germans. In the initial battlecruiser action, the German edge was even more lop-sided: the Germans scored 44 hits versus only 17 hits for the numerically-superior British.
Organizationally, this volume would have done better to provide strict time delimiters, to break the action into phases. Instead, the author uses the "flow" style, which gets very confusing after the initial battlecruiser action. The maps help to sort out the battle, but the text does not. One wonders also why the author included photographs of the Goeben, and ships sunk in the Falklands Battle two years prior to Jutland, but no photos of several major ships such as the Lutzow and Pommerm which were sunk there.
Finally, the author seems somewhat unsatisfied with the indecisive conclusion of Jutland, as everyone always seems to be, except perhaps the Germans. The author uses the fact that the Grand Fleet "remained on the battlefield" the next morning to claim a victory for sea control and assert that Jellicoe would have won any follow-up engagement off the Horn Reef. Here the author's bias ignores the fact that the Grand Fleet had lost all cohesion after twelve hours of fighting; most of the destroyers were separated in the night action and three dreadnoughts had wandered off 45 miles away from the main body. Certainly Jellicoe had the strength to finish off any German cripples, but any renewed battle would have witnessed a thoroughly-spread out Grand Fleet fighting in minimal visibility conditions. Any action on 1 June would likely have been a scaled-down repeat of the previous day: ships blundering into each other in the haze and quick, furtive exchanges of gun fire. More ships might have been sunk, but without radar, air support, better navigation and improved communications, the clash of dreadnoughts could not be decisive in 1916.
Despite the author's bias and certain errors, this volume is still a valuable adjunct to any Jutland collection. Just remember to keep other works handy to sort out the omissions.

A Consise Account

This book does a very good job of taking a large, complex naval battle and passing on most of the essentials without getting bogged down.

The book makes short mention of a lot of the fine details surrounding the battle and sticks to the essentials of having the reader understand it in general terms at the end. Pictures and maps are well placed and succeed in giving a novice reader a pretty complete idea of what happened.

The books seems to try to avoid a lot of the controversy but does lean in favour of the Royal Navy but does not do this to any exaggerated extent. For those interested in a deeper, more thorough study there are many works that address the battle in more detal.

For anyone new to naval history or reading their first account of the battle this is an excellent book to get started with!

Primer on Jutland!

There have been countless books on the 1916 naval battle of Jutland, the only major fleet engagement of WWI, a battle that continues to be controversial to this day. Jutland was one of those 'what-if' battles where changes could have tipped the scales. Charles London's 2000 Osprey book offers up a capsule guide to this epic battle.

Reading London's book, it's hard not to characterize as Jutland as a naval brawl with almost-blinded adversaries stumbling upon each other and then savagely pummeling each other before plowing off into the darkness only to repeat the process. The Grand Fleet, which lost more ships than Germany but still claimed victory, did not cover itself in glory at Jutland with numerous gaffes, goofs and other missed opportunities undercutting the victory. The High Seas Fleet had its shares of blunders as well.

At 96 pages, London's book isn't exhaustive but does a fair job of summarizing the pre-battle build-up, the actual conflict and events following. You do have to pay attention when battle commences and devolves into to-ing and fro-ing. Having clear breaks in the narrative, in conjunction with the 2D and 3D maps, would have made it easier to follow what was a very confusing battle. And I would have liked more on the postwar controversies regarding British and German actions during the battle.

The book includes a nice selection of photographs including rare battle scenes and four atmospheric battle scene artworks.

All in all, a fairly good summary of one hellaciously confusing brawl in the North Sea. Recommended.

One such strategy, Progressive Relaxation Training, grew out of a set of methods originating in the 1930s in the writings of Edmund Jacobson. The primary purpose of this guide is to set forth in detail the therapist behaviors and skills necessary for the effective application of progressive relaxation training. The guide was designed to provide therapists in many disciplines―including psychology, psychiatry, social work, pastoral counseling, nursing, and rehabilitation services, for example―with the tools they need to train their clients in relaxation. About the Author

DOUGLAS A. BERNSTEIN is Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Courtesy Professor of Psychology at the University of South Florida. He has written, with Thomas D. Borkovec, Progressive Relaxation Training and, with M.T. Nietzel and R. Milich, Introduction to Clinical Psychology. He is also lead author on the fifth edition of an introductory textbook, Psychology. He is a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.

THOMAS D. BORKOVEC is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Pennsylvania State University. His empirical work has involved both basic and applied research, and his therapy outcome investigations on the cognitive behavioral treatment of generalized anxiety disorder have been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health since 1984. He has published more than 120 journal articles and book chapters.

HOLLY HAZLETT-STEVENS is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her work focuses on anxiety and relaxation research.

this book is very helpful in outlining the steps to progressive relaxation. At times, it's a little redundant, but other than this it really is a good and helpful book! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about relaxation and how to teach a client or yourself how to truly relax.

Great but needed better editing!

This is a really great cookbook, especially for anyone who loves Uchi and wants to learn more about Tyson's philosophy about food, etc. I was a bit disappointed that several of the recipes have left out components entirely (ie, the soil for the polenta custard that has been served at Uchiko and is even in the picture of the dessert in the book, but not included in the recipe) and that often the measurements given for the desserts are messed up (ie, look at the coffee panna cotta with mango yolk, it tells you multiple times for 12 ounces cups of X ingredient). It's especially disheartening in the pastry section--where precise measurement is a necessity. I think they were changing the recipes to account for smaller portions and just screwed up the editing. For some of the other dishes (non-pastry) you can tell the portions were converted smaller but the sauces or other components were not--so you kinda have to find your way after making each recipe a couple of times. So just make sure to pay attention to the amounts, otherwise you'll put 12 cups of water in your sorbet.

Great restaurant, mediocre cookbook with good photography

Eating at Uchi or Uchiko is a life changing experience. The flavors are crisp, the quality is incredible, and the service is typically beyond impeccable. Since we don't all have $200/person to blow every time we want to experience Uchi (non-happy hour), the cookbook would theoretically be the next best thing.

There's a lot of things that are served as Uchi that are simple, and there are many that are quite complicated to reproduce. Unfortunately, this cookbook chooses to focus on many of the most complicated recipes rather than the make-at home ones. If you're looking for the brussels sprouts recipe, for example, you're out of luck. Head to [...] if you're looking. That's the closest I've found...

If this cookbook had been more like Heston Blumenthal at Home, it would have been more approachable to cook from. Additionally, as other reviewers have noted, some of the recipes seem incomplete or that the units are incorrect. If you do a search, for example, on how to make the Uchi brussels sprouts, you'll find that Tyson Cole has given interviews in which he gives basically a completely different recipe for making fish caramel than what's presented in the cookbook. This is true with some of the other recipes as well.

As always with any cookbook focusing on more haute cuisine, the most difficult thing is going to be the same quality of ingredients used by the chefs. Generally, it's just not possible to do as a consumer. However, given that Uchi is at this point, still a very regional restaurant patronized by Texans, it might have been a good addition and quite helpful to have a resource guide in the back on where to at least get some of the produce used by Uchi. If you're in Houston for example, Utility Research Garden is what both Oxheart and Uchi use for a lot of their stuff. So, another reason this cookbook loses stars. Yes, the photography is nice, and you can maybe get the concept of the food from the cookbook, but realistically, there's not too much you can cook out of it.

Looking forward to visiting Austin!

Great cookbook - best part is how Mr. Cole describes his reasoning behind his techniques and dishes. It was nice to read about his philosophy on how to order and enjoy sushi, rather than treat this remarkable delicacy as 'fast food.' Far too often, diners order sushi in bulk, making other diners have to wait as the chef has to make the large orders before progressing to the next one. I enjoyed his take on many classic Japanese dishes, and really do look forward to the day when I may enjoy his restaurant and experience.

Wordy but full of good information.

This book is packed with a great deal of first hand interviews, and really does get into some of the complicated Cultural shifts that Egypt went thought that impacted the Rise and fall of Dance in Egypt. Unfortunately, the author uses 3 words wherever 1 or 2 would suffice, and repeats herself often. The book would be greatly improved by a good copy editor.
The contents are worth the effort. I think that this should be required reading for anyone studying Dance anthropology or seeking to study Bellydance.

Too many books about Oriental/belly/Middle Eastern dance lean toward fantasy rather than scholarship. Van Nieuwkerk's book explores the seemingly paradoxical love-hate relationship many people have toward Egyptian belly dancing and dancers and details the history of the dance over the past few centuries.

This is a fabulous and unique book which should be read by all scholars of the Middle East. Because entertainment has been so central to the identity of Egyptians this is an essential read. The author provides fascinating insights on the construction of gender in Egypt, the public/private realm, the complex web of morals and the role of dance and music in political development. This is worth twice it weight.

Since 1972, the Americas Review (formerly Revista Chicano-Rique?a) has presented prose, verse, essays and visual art by Latinos living in the U.S.; this anthology celebrates the magazine's 25th birthday by reprinting work from its pages. TAR editor Flores divides her 27 prose writers and 52 poets into three stages meant to illustrate the development of Latino writing, from early concerns with group representation and political impact to more recent formal experiments. First-generation writers like Rolando Hinojosa-Smith, Tomas Rivera and Lucha Corpi strove to unify and engage Hispanic cultures through literature; some of them wrote in Spanish, in forms called "estampas" (brief sketches). Rudolfo Anaya, Sheila Ortiz-Taylor, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Pat Mora and Alurista produced autobiographical works that code-switched effortlessly between English and Spanish. Second-generation writers like Julia Alvarez, Denise Chavez, Alberto Rios and Ana Castillo later achieved broader recognition; their early work, reprinted here, demonstrates both their craft and sophistication, and their awareness of audiences both Latino and Anglo. Flores calls the third generation of U.S. Latino writers "New Navigators of the Floating Borderlands"; Kathleen Alcala, Sandra Benitez, Rane Arroyo and their coevals use their expanded technical resources to describe familiar elements of the U.S. Hispanic experience: family, language, inheritance, displacement, immigration issues, gender, myth, citylife. Readers will appreciate the breadth of Flores's selections. Others will regret the absence of Sandra Cisneros and Gary Soto (a footnote implies that Flores tried to include them); others may ask why neither biographical nor explanatory notes accompany the stories and poems. Still, this is a volume that's long overdue: readers (and teachers) seeking a good, wide-ranging anthology of short works by U.S. Latinos will be glad this book exists.

YA-An excellent anthology that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the journal of the Hispanic literary arts, The Americas Review. With the publication of this collection of short fiction and poetry, mature readers of Spanish and English can trace the emergence of contemporary Hispanic voices in the U.S. Organized into three sections, the volume represents three distinct stages of the cultural identity of American Hispanics: "Nationhood Messengers" (pioneer writers, 1970-1984); "Memory Makers" (the 1980s); and "New Navigators of the Floating Borderlands" (the 1990s). While the pieces are written predominantly in English, secondary Spanish students will also find sufficient fare to challenge them. Among the most interesting of the pioneering writers' contributions is Miguel Algar!n's "Paterson," evocative of William Carlos Williams's long epic of the same name. From the contemporary prose segment, Elenza Diaz Bjorkquist's short story, "The Hershey Bar Queen," will fascinate YAs because of its unrelenting honesty. Modern themes arise: women's issues, the immigrant experience, urban travel, farm-laborers' experiences, etc. In addition, the 16 images in the art plates add much to the presentation. An important contribution to cultural studies of Hispanics in America.

The Americas Review, formerly known as Revista Chicano-Riquena, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an anthology of short stories and poetry. Flores, chair of Latin American studies at the University of Washington and editor of The Americas Review, has collected works showing the themes of U.S. Latino literature, e.g., family relations, migrant farm labor, and women's issues. The works are written in Spanish or English and arranged in three divisions indicating the evolution of Hispanic writing. "National Messengers" features pieces that helped to define cultural identity for Chicanos, Nuyoricans, and other groups within the Latino community. "Memory Makers" features earlier works of now-famous writers such as Julia Alvarez, Denise Chavez, and Luis J. Rodrigues. The final section, "New Navigators of the Floating Borderlands" includes Latino writers just beginning their careers. An Excellent Accounting of Hispanic Literature in the US

This collection demonstrates the diversity of talents, voices and languages within the Chicano/ Latino ethnic canon. There is something here for any reader: if you are new to the literature this is the perfect introduction; if you are a seasoned reader of Hispanic writers then you will be glad to have the best of the best gathered in one volume. I would point out some favorites, but I wouldn't want to lessen the importance of those writings I don't mention. Check it out for yourself. The final section--the new navigators (i.e. younger writers) is full of awesome and promising work. A great read.
