Current scientific evidence suggests that free radicals― unstable by-products produced by normal human metabolic processes―damage the body, resulting in chronic health disorders and degenerative changes associated with aging. Nutritional products on the market today promise antioxidants can reduce―possibly even reverse―damage caused by these free radicals. If true, that would mean less chronic disease and premature aging, at the very least. But are antioxidants indeed the new Fountain of Youth? Media reports extol antioxidants as the solution to disease and aging, and some studies do seem to back up those reports. Yet the studies that have been completed are far from conclusive, and taking antioxidant supplements can be dangerous. This book explores current thinking, analyzes studies, and answers the questions: What are antioxidants? What do they do? Is there any real benefit to taking them as supplements? Are there real dangers for me?
Media report preliminary and conflicting scientific studies on antioxidants, notwithstanding the fact that the final analysis about their effectiveness and safety is incomplete. The result is increasing sales of dietary supplements and so-called functional foods or nutraceuticals that are not regulated, nor proven, and a possible public safety crisis from hypersupplementation. Milbury and Richer bring us up to date, sharing nuances and emerging news regarding antioxidants―and their dangers. Understanding the Antioxidant Controversy is an educated consumers' and health professionals' guide to this controversial topic.

Review
"Packed with information, this slim volume places the subject of antioxidants in a broader context. Early chapters provide detailed, well-referenced discussions of dietary supplement and nutrition topics, including scientific history, regulatory and legal aspects, and epidemiology. Research scientist Milbury (Tufts) and dietitian Richer (Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, MA) then describe the oxidation process. Readers will need some background in chemistry to follow this section, which quickly becomes quite complex. Having explained the vast size and controversies of antioxidant research, the authors summarize the most important findings. Recommendations follow for many popular supplements, including vitamins C and E, carotenoids, flavonoids, and selenium. Extensive tables compare current dietary guidelines. Supplementing the text are diagrams, a glossary, a recommended Web sites list, and hundreds of references. Although many books deal with antioxidant supplements, the majority are written for a general audience and do not address the science, history, and regulatory issues….Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through health professionals; researchers from various disciplines." - Choice
Review
"This volume represents an up-to-date and comprehensive reference on an important and sometimes confusing topic….Welcome information for health practitioners and anyone else who is trying to understand the conflicting messages that have come out on these intriguing compounds. With a thorough review of the data and critical interpretation, this book is timely, authoritative and necessary… Health practitioners will find the information contained in this book to be interesting and important when counseling their patients on diets, as well as when and how much to take of antioxidant dietary supplements. Reliable nutritional advice for patients can only be given by health practitioners who are well-informed, and it is this book that provides the information needed on antioxidants." (Robert M. Russell, MD Director, Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center)
"More reports are coming out in scientific journals showing a lack of benefit from antioxidant vitamin supplements, and some have reported harm. Milbury and Richer carefully pick their way through this minefield of conflicting and confusing results. The book is extensively documented, with an extensive bibliography that cites many fascinating works, some of which have been overlooked by other writers." (Paul Ernsberger, Ph.D. Department of Nutrition, Case Western Reserve University)

A Cynical Condemnation of Antioxidants & Supplements
By K. M. Smith
"Understanding The Antioxidant Controversy" is a highly critical view of the role of antioxidants (and nutritional supplements) in health. The authors are skeptical (borderlining on cynical), and raise doubts on the efficacy, safety and usage of antioxidants & supplements (because of a perceived paucity of scientific proof as well as a lack of regulation & blessing from the FDA).
Why do the authors believe FDA approval and oversight is so crucial? They site some historical examples of how things were in the mid 1800's to early 1900's. And while they bring up some good points, I feel they extrapolate too much and put too much faith in our bureaucratic (and often fraud-ridden) governmental agencies. It's important to keep in mind that modern medicine is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States (accounting for 225,000 deaths per year). Despite spending more money on healthcare than the next 20 nations combined, Americans are some of the sickest people on earth. In my parent's generation, they started getting sick in their 60's. In my generation, people started getting sick in their 40's. Now it's teenagers and children getting sicker and sicker. (All of this despite the best of intentions and endless money being spent by pharmaceutical industries, the blessing of the FDA and the endorsement of the AMA).
While well organized an well written, this book is a disservice to anyone who is interested in optimal wellness. Just because something hasn't been proven in the laboratory doesn't necessarily mean it's not valid. Electricity existed long before Ben Franklin. The world was round long before Ferdinand Magellan. And the earth revolved around the sun long before Galileo. FDA approval does not necessarily mean it's safe (see Vioxx, Bextra, Celebrex, Thalidomide, Tolcapone, and many others). All were surrounded by so-called scientific proof, subsequently approved by the FDA and ended up killing people.
And this is why there is now a doctrinal shift in the way people are thinking about health, where it comes from and what we need to do to preserve it. It's why people are learning about antixodiants and preventing the devastating effects of free radical damage. It's why epigenetics will come into the forefront of wellness based health care, ultimately replacing allopathic disease-care. It's why more and more people are learning about organic foods, hormone & antibiotic-free animal proteins, the intelligent and thoughtful use of supplements (to supplement and enhance a clean diet), in exercise, rest and stress management all as the cornerstones of health. And it's why we have pro-allopathic, pro-pharmaceutical people (like the authors of this book) desperately trying to fight back, to preserve their industry. If you're truly interested in learning about antioxidants and their benefits, don't buy this book. You won't get any useful information.

Best Explanation I've Ever Read
By Warren
This book is the best explanation and breakdown of free radicals and antioxidants I've ever read. With so many health claims about "antioxidants" and "free radicals" I had to actually read a book that explains what these things are. I was frustrated by sales people and even some health care practitioners talking about free radicals when they really had no idea what a free radical was or how it worked. This book does a great job of explaining what free radicals are, how they are produced, and how your body typically neutralizes them. This book is also not just dry and boring, as many books explaining scientific principles are.
In my opinion if you are doing something health related based on antioxidants or free radicals then you need to read this book so you have an understanding of what you are actually doing.
