EDWARD S. CASEY is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at State University of New York, Stony Brook, and the author of several acclaimed books, among them Getting Back into Place and The World at a Glance.
MARY WATKINS is Professor of Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California, where she also serves as director of Community and Ecopsychological Fieldwork and Research. Her previous books, widely read, include Toward Psychologies of Liberation, coauthored with Helene Shulman, and Invisible Guests: The Development of Imaginal Dialogues.

Up Against the Wall: Re-Imagining the U.S. – Mexico Border, by Ed Casey and Mary Watkins, is an important work that sheds light and sparks much needed conversation on the topic of the border wall between Mexico and the United States and its far reaching effects on the environment and those bodies that encounter it. As these two authors recount their own reflections and encounters with the wall, we are called on to review and re-view the very terminology we use to describe La Frontera in order to re-think our interaction, to remember our shared histories, and to re-imagine a very different future guided by “transborder ethics” and a “politics of hospitality.”
Part I of the text, written by Ed Casey, invites us to re-view La Frontera and the terminology we use to characterize it. Beginning with definitions of border, boundary, and edge we see the inherent ambiguity that the wall at La Frontera holds. We are then invited to reflect on the two’ing that occurs at the border, to see el otro lado, the other side, taking Ambos Nogales as a case study. Establishing this theme of twoness, we are then guided by the authors through reflections of the way in which the border inhabits the very flesh of those who live in the areas surrounding La Frontera. Using Casey’s conception of ecotones we can see what being at the border requires. By “looking both ways at the border” and its function as border and boundary, we are enabled to clearly see both of its sides.
In part II of the text, penned by Mary Watkins, we are invited to use our newly cultivated double vision to look at the wall “both ways.” This looking both ways calls us remember. To remember the shared but forgotten historias, histories and stories, of the legacies of internal colonialism, as well as the devastating and ongoing effects of “Juan Crow.” In the chapter “The Souls of Anglos” we are shown that the effects of the struggle at La Frontera are not limited to our Mexican neighbors, those of Mexican heritage, and the immigrants that make their way across to the US. The wall at La Frontera has profound effects on the souls of Anglos, too.
Up Against the Wall, a truly decolonial text, serves as an invitation and solicitation to re-imagine the border, to Anglos and Mexicans alike. We glimpse the ways in which such a re-imagining and re-creation might be possible with Watkins’ descriptions of the creative acts of resistance taking place at the border in the form of border wall art and performances. We as readers are called upon to imagine and engage in a transborder ethics, to acknowledge our shame and accept our complicity in the holding up of the wall in the hopes that we might to instead turn to a radical politics of hospitality. With their text, Casey and Watkins open up a space to re-imagine the future at La Frontera, a future in which the healing of la herida abierta, the open wound, is possible.
