About the Author
A sixth-generation Texan, the late Terry G. Jordan held the Walter Prescott Webb Chair in History and Ideas in the Department of Geography at the University of Texas at Austin. His many publications include Texas Log Buildings and German Seed in Texas Soil, both published by the University of Texas Press.

A superb wealth of information

This book is a must have for anyone interested in the Texas graveyards. Written with a more cultural and social viewpoint, it immediately began as an excellent read with many places that you can actually visit for yourself!

Tx Graveyards--another excellent resource

For anyone interested in rural graveyard history, this book has it all. Even though it is slanted toward Texas Germans (Jordan is a 6th gen. Texan) and their particular way of burying their dead, southern, black and hispanic rituals are treated justly.
Tidbits:
-in the southern Texan tradition (East, Southeast), sinners and thieves are buried facing south. Everyone else faces east to receive the morning sun, and the second coming.
-All burial rituals in Texas are basically based on pagan theology, but Germans apparently take this idea farther than most - they employ, among other things, pentagrams and other sun symbols popular with satanists.

Fascinating and important book on the cultural aspects of Texas graves and graveyards

In Texas, the graveyards are a telling sign of the culture that surrounds these cemeteries especially the early ones. Terry G. Jordan in 1982 published this interesting book based up the travels of the "back roads and hidden trails" that led to these fascinating cemeteries. He encountered the Anglo-American, Black, Indian, Mexican and German Cemeteries that are throughout Texas and most are dated back to the founding of the Lone Star State after the Texas Revolution.
Many of these cemeteries are a reflection of traditional culture that was in the area and carried over from Europe or Africa, or Ancient Native American Influence and customs. Through photographs, maps, and drawings he illustrates Texas graveyards and beliefs behind their creation.
As stated in the inner leaf, "Texas Graveyards is important in preserving a Texas legacy endangered by changing customs, rural depopulation, vandals, and the erosion of time." Since its publication 32 years ago many of the graves and cemeteries have either fallen further into disrepair or have disappeared altogether. That is why this is an important book for Texas History since it is illustrated with many photographs of graves and cemeteries that are no longer existing. Let us hope that over the last 30 years that people have been able to save and preserve many of these graves, tombstones, and cemeteries not only for the sake of the descendants of the people buried, but for our own cultural heritage of the many cultures of Texas. A very IMPORTANT and HISTORICAL book that is highly recommended to anyone interested in the history of Texas and the many culture the great state has!
