About the Author
After missionary service in South Thailand, Dennis Lennon ministered in Cambridge and Edinburgh before becoming Bishop's Adviser in Evangelism for the Diocese of Sheffield and vicar of a rural parish in South Yorkshire.

Exquisitely beautiful ideas. Thoughtful, mindful, deep and fresh.

Dennis Lennon does an amazing job at exposing and "turning the diamond" (George Herbert's sonnet) for us to see. His skill at such creative, meaningful writing is really a lost art. This is one of those books you won't find a like of again. And it deserves to be on the same shelf with only the most important writings in your library.
The book is written around a sonnet by George Herbert (1593 - 1633) who was an aristocratic academic, a Latin and Greek scholar, spoke Italian, French, and Spanish. He was a Public Orator at Cambridge University, a Member of Parliament, and an accomplished musician. In the first chapter you learn that in 1626 he resigned his seat in Parliament and was ordained in the Church of England, becoming Rector of Bemerton, a small rural parish on the edge of Salisbury in 1630. Three years later at 40, he died. By the time of his death his practical care for the poor was proverbial. You can still see his parting message, addressed 'to my successor' above the porch at the front of Bemerton Rectory which he rebuilt largely at his own expense: If thou chance for to find
A new house to they mind,
And built without thy cost:
Be good to the poor,
As God gives thee store,
And then, my labour's not lost.
The following sonnet deserves a space in this review, since the entire book is written around it, each chapter devoted to one of the lines:
'Prayer'
"Prayer the Church's banquet, Angels' age,
God's breath in man returning to his birth,
The soul in paraphrase, heart in pilgrimage,
The Christian plummet sounding heaven and earth;
Engine against the Almighty, sinner's tower,
Reversed thunder, Christ-side-piercing spear,
The six-days world transposing in an hour,
A kind of tune, which all things hear and fear;
Softness, and peace, and joy, and love, and bliss,
Exalted Manna, gladness of the best,
Heaven in ordinary, Man well dressed,
The Milky Way, the bird of Paradise,
Church-bells beyond the stars heard, the soul's blood,
The land of spices; something understood."
At first I thought the sonnet was a bit unusual, "out there", not something I could appreciate as "deep". But this is where Dennis comes in, and with the God endowed talent of a spiritual sage, casts a light on this diamond such that its rays hit the floor, ceiling, and walls in too many places to count. Really.
For example, in the first chapter Dennis writes, " If we were to approach Herbert's house in search of spiritual resources for a Christian life under today's spiritually stressful conditions, my guess is that he would have us weighed and measured with a glance. He would notice the tell-tale signs of our spiritual exhaustion and quiet despair, which derive from our terminal self-reliance; our unbridled restlessness; and the worldliness, which leaves the super-structure of our faith intact while eating our its heart and lungs. I believe George Herbert, wise pastor, would disappear into that storeroom
of his at the back of the house and emerge with 'Prayer' for our renewal."
This book is more than thoughts about prayer. If you have ever seen prayer as 'mere duty, or grim duty, or empty duty' and you yearn to feel a greater ability to connect with Diety, or just plain wonder if God really concerns Himself with each individual, then this book will not disappoint. For the book works many literary feats. In fact, it would do marvels for our society, Christian or not, if this was read over all pulpits - its message is universal enough because we are gently reminded of our meaning to God as his child, and our power we have through prayer to get His attention. This is one of those books you will want to read over and over because it is so rich and layered. I can not say enough about this book.
