Constructing a chronology from letters, interviews, and new analyses of their works, "Northwest Mythologies" re-examines the careers and complex friendships of Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson, and explores their different understandings of what it meant to be an artist. Sheryl Conkelton is a curator and historian based in Seattle. Among the many exhibitions she has organized are Uta Barth: In Between Places and Annette Messager. Other publications include Frederick Sommer and What It Meant to Be Modern: Seattle Art at Mid-Century. She has worked at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Laura Landau is an independent curator who has held positions with the Henry Art Gallery, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. They are co-curators of the Tacoma Art Museum’s exhibition Northwest Mythologies: The Interactions of Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson.
