Before the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century A.D., the Inka Empire stretched along the Pacific side of South America, all the way from Ecuador to northwest Argentina. Though today many Inka researchers focus on the imperial capital of Cuzco, Peru, and surrounding areas, ruins of Inka settlements abound throughout the vast territory of the former empire and offer many clues about how the empire was organized, managed, and defended. These outlying settlements, as well as those in the Cuzco area, form the basis for John Hyslop's detailed study Inka Settlement Planning.
Using extensive aerial photography and detailed site maps, Hyslop studies the design of several dozen settlements spread throughout the empire. In addition to describing their architecture and physical infrastructure, he gives special emphasis to the symbolic aspects of each site's design. Hyslop speculates that the settlement plans incorporate much iconography expressive of Inka ideas about the state, the cosmos, and relationships to non-Inka peoples—iconography perhaps only partially related to the activities that took place within the sites. And he argues that Inka planning concepts applied not only to buildings but also to natural features (stone outcrops, water sources, and horizons) and specialized landscaping (terracing).
Of interest to a wide readership in archaeology, architecture, urbanization, empire building, and Andean travel, Inka Settlement Planning charts one of Native America's greatest achievements.

Eye-opening, definitive account of the Incan world

This is a great book. Don't be put off by the dry title, this is much more than just a bunch of plans of Incan settlements. Instead Hyslop provides a wealth of information about the Inca world to a level that simply isn't covered by anyone else. His chapter on Incan Cuzco is excellent. His discussion of Incan military architecture is not matched by anyone else and shows how the Inca attempted to protect their borders and win their battles. He touches on Incan astronomy. A fascinating topic is his chapter on 'mixed-Inkan settlements' - sites right on the border of the empire showing just how the Inca interacted with their neighbours. The book is strewn with a wealth of photographs including many of little known sites and excellent plans and shows how much architecture remains in the former empire, even at its fringes, a fact that often gets neglected when most books concentrate only on the Incan heartland. If you can't buy it then borrow it - its certainly worth the effort of tracking it down.

Currently, it's the last word on the topic

_Inca Settlement Planning_ is a detailed look at Inka architecture and city planning laid out in series of topical chapters. Writing in a no-nonsense style, Hyslop succeeds in making an esoteric topic pleasant and accessible to a wide audience. Hyslop has visited many of the sites he writes about and the book is liberally illustrated with the author's own photographs as well as diagrams and other graphics. The work is generally well-thought of and should be considered canonical. A steal at the price. Mike Turton
