A Must-Have...

...for lovers of Ukiyo-e. The whole series "Thirty-Two Aspects of Daily Life" is beautifully presented in full-colour and full-size plates. The book features in-depth information about each print, Yoshitoshi's life and the time he lived in. I strongly recommend this book!

Great book, not so great series.

When it comes to the way it's published, this book has no flaws. Writing about topic and commentaries to the plates are well written and interesting, reproductions are big and colours are vivid. Authors and publishers did their best, no complains here. But I'd recommend the book only for dedicated enthusiasts of Yoshitoshi's art or bijin-ga (Japanese beauties portraits) genre in ukiyo-e. This is not the series of the quality we know from Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Aspects of the Moon or New Forms of Thirty-Six Strange Things. It's actually the dullest series by Yoshitoshi I know. On the other hand, the quality of prints (both in term of desing and printing quality) is very good - they're great bijin-ga. So if you like bijin-ga, go for it. If you want to know everything by Yoshitoshi (like me), go for it. Otherwise, well it's a good book, but maybe not a good point to start your journey with Yoshitoshi. I wouldn't fall for his art if I started with this series.

Brilliant portraits by an unsurpassed master

While this series does not have the fantasy of Yoshitoshi's supernatural prints, or the bloody violence of much of his other work, it shares with them an extraordinary sense of design, color, pattern and observation. Every work that I've seen by this unparalleled artist is worth close study. In this instance, in addition to his work's usual virtues, we have his view of society as seen in the individual situations of many women. And for many, a series without gore or ghosts may be advantageous!
