About the Author
JACOB LASSNER is Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick Professor of Jewish Civilization at Northwestern University. He specializes in medieval Near Eastern History with an emphasis on urban structures, political culture, and the background to Jewish-Muslim relations.
Michael Bonner is professor of medieval Islamic history in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. He received his PhD in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, Princeton University, in 1987. His recent publications include Jihad in Islamic History: Doctrines and Practices (2006) and Poverty and Charity in Middle Eastern Contexts, co-edited with Amy Singer and Mine Ener (2003). He has been a Helmut S. Stern fellow at the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and professeur invité at the Institut d'Etudes de l'Islam et des Sociétés du Monde Musulman, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France and of Chaire de l'Institut du Monde Arabe, also in Paris. He was director of the University of Michigan Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies in 1997-2000 and 2001-2003, and acting chair of the Department of Near Eastern Studies in 2007-08.

Fresh Look at the Golden Age

This is a fresh look at the first four centuries of Islam by two talented historians. It’s a valuable introduction to the subject, not only because it cites the latest international scholarship on the origins of the Islamic community and the important years of the Abbasid dynasty, but also because it consciously avoids western biases that have plagued “Orientalist” scholars over the years.
The work features unexpected insights, such as the authors’ rejection of the view of “a long line of historians” that the Abbasid state, though ruled by Arabs, was essentially “a new Iranian empire.” Recent research shows the Abbasids – Arab aristocrats from the Hijaz and the family of the Prophet – were brought to power and kept there not by Persians but by a revolutionary movement manned and led by thoroughly Arab warriors of the provincial standing army in Khurasan.
The book has three main sections: an examination of the Prophet Muhammad’s mission and the origins of the Islamic community or Ummah; the transformation of the Ummah into an “Arab Kingdom” (the Umayyads) and the restoration of the Prophet’s family to power in the Abbasid dynasty, which became a “Universal Islamic Empire” based in Baghdad; and a thoughtful discussion of religious scholarship and practice in those four centuries, including creation of the four schools of Islamic law.
The story is told clearly and insightfully, with relevance for the non-specialist reader. While they explore the ideas of the great Islamic philosophers and theologians – such as the clash of the Muta‘zilite “rationalists” with the Traditionalists of Ibn Hanbal, and the compromise between those two opposing views that was forged by al-Ash‘ari – they remind us that only a small proportion of the populace paid much attention to these concepts; most Muslims were concerned with applying their faith to the pressing problems of daily life in the Middle Ages.
